hypocrisy

Paul Krugman, NY Times columnist and Nobel laureate in economics, agrees with Obama’s declaration that ‘Income Inequality’ is “the defining challenge of our age.”

But this has not stopped him from accepting a position as “distinguished scholar” at the City University of NY Graduate Center’s Luxembourg Income Study Center.

Via Gawker: Income Inequality Institute Will Pay Paul Krugman $25,000 Per Month

….According to a formal letter obtained under New York’s Freedom of Information Law, CUNY intends to pay Krugman $225,000, or $25,000 per month (over two semesters), to “play a modest role in our public events” and “contribute to the build-up” of a new “inequality initiative.” It is not clear, and neither CUNY nor Krugman was able to explain, what “contribute to the build-up” entails.

It’s certainly not teaching. “You will not be expected to teach or supervise students,” the letter informs Professor Krugman, who replies: “I admit that I had to read it several times to be clear … it’s remarkably generous.” (After his first year, Krugman will be required to host a single seminar.)

Krugman will also be given an annual research/travel fund of $10,000, and up to $10,000 for moving expenses.

As Gawker notes, $225,000 is more than quadruple New York City’s median household income.

Apparently, Krugman does not understand irony.

What’s the fair salary for a critic of inequality? $1 million? $10 million? Or did Slate mean that the fair salary is less than $225,000. In that case, I have 2 cents in my pocket. Wouldn’t want Krugman to be accused of being a one percenter. More than fair.

Gee, I wonder what the average student’s parent at City University of NY thinks about this waste? $225,000 for doing nothing. Sounds like liberal paradise. He has arrived.

The salary, paid by the citizens of New York City.

In other one-percenter news; lawyers give big bucks to Charlie Crist’s campaign for Florida Governor. Need tort reform now.
