Students who begin college in January will no longer be referred to as “spring admits.”

The term, apparently, is not “inclusive” enough, and their feelings might be hurt.

Because they’re such special little snowflakes.

Via Campus Reform: Berkeley to avoid calling freshmen ‘spring admits’ because it hurts their feelings

In an effort to make the campus more “inclusive,” freshmen students who are admitted for the spring semester at the University of California, Berkeley, will no longer be referred to as “spring admits.”

According to The Daily Californian, the public school’s student newspaper, the change is an effort to make students who are admitted for the spring semester feel less inferior to those admitted in the fall. Amy Jarich, assistant vice chancellor and director of undergraduate admissions, told the student publication that “spring admit” students can feel as though “their admission was significantly different” from other freshmen.

This doesn’t bother me if it’s not some part of a larger pattern. I do wonder though about the reason for Spring Admits. Are they students who just missed the cut for Sept. admission, are they more lower-income family students, or…? Ms. Jarich’s history is one of working to aid the poor, so this may be a result of that. http://www.nacacnet.org/about/Governance/election/Pages/Nominee-Jarich.aspx

Side note, Ms. Jarich went to Sweet Briar College which recently announced it will close. And the Commonwealth of Virginia just announced that it has filed suit against Sweet Briar. http://www.businessinsider.com/columbus-mayor-teresa-tomlinson-says-she-wasnt-told-the-school-would-close-2015-3
