But no money for veterans’ healthcare?

A recent review of the Department of Interior’s mobile devices showed the agency is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars a year on unused phones and tablets. Further, poor device management policies mean those that are being used suffer from security weaknesses.

According to an inspector general report released June 29, Interior spends $16.5 million annually on procurement and support of its 35,576 devices. Auditors investigated four bureaus — Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, Fish and Wildlife and U.S. Geological Survey — and discovered they spent upwards of $605,000 a year on more than 1,500 unused devices….

The report notes the review only covered the four bureaus listed above and only analyzed device usage for Interior’s contract with Verizon.

“Based on the scope of our review … we believe that the amount of overspending and number of unused devices departmentwide is certainly higher,” the report states….
