The Justice Department is considering bringing federal charges against Jose Ines Garcia Zarate after his not guilty verdict in the Kate Steinle murder trial, department officials told Fox News on Friday.
A California jury acquitted Zarate of the more serious charges in the case, including murder, involuntary manslaughter and assault with a deadly weapon — only convicting him of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
U.S. immigration officials had said they would deport Garcia Zarate – also known as Juan Francisco Lopez Sanchez — who already had been deported five times and was wanted for a sixth deportation when Steinle was fatally shot in the back while walking with her father.
The undocumented felon could spend three years in prison for the firearm charge but has already been behind bars for over two years as the case has made its way through court.Justice Department spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores acknowledged Friday that the DOJ is looking at federal charges. She suggested a possible charge could be felony re-entry or a charge pertaining to a violation of supervised release….

This should have been a federal case from the beginning. After the number or deportations he violated, entering the US illegally is a federal crime. As a federal criminal, he should have been subjected to the federal legal system. Of course we know who was POSUS at the time.

I’m just heartbroken for her parents and the whole family. Speechless really. If there is no justice for this, is there justice at all?
The Kate’s Law BILL should be reintroduced & passed ! That would give some level of Justice & Meaning to her death . Or well just a bullet between the scumbags eyes or prison justice.
The guy said he was aiming at a seal, not at the girl he killed. He got lucky. If he’d killed the seal, he’d be in jail for life. Here in California, we take seal killing very seriously.
