FDA Proposes a Limit on Arsenic in Rice Cereal for Babies
by Tammy on April 3, 2016Um, thanks? Amazing what you think would be common sense yet is heralded as a great suggestion by a federal agency which even when dealing with arsenic, stopped short of advising parents to avoid infant rice cereal altogether.” Ugh. Via NY Times. The Food and Drug Administration proposed on Friday a limit for inorganic arsenic in infant rice cereal, saying that this common starter food is a leading source of exposure to the toxin. Infants are particularly vulnerable to arsenic in rice because, relative to body weight, they eat about three times more rice than adults. A growing body of research suggests that arsenic exposure is related not only to diminished intellectual function early in life, but also to adverse...

Stop China From Killing Our Pets
by Pat_S on October 23, 2013The FDA is asking for public cooperation in tracking down the cause of dog and cat illnesses relating to jerky treats. The symptoms are decreased appetite, decreased activity, vomiting, diarrhea (sometimes with blood or mucus), increased water drinking, and increased urination within hours of eating the treats. Sixty percent of the cases involved gastrointestinal illness, 30 percent kidney and urinary systems, the other 10 percent a variety of symptoms such as collapse, convulsions or skin issues. From the FDA: Why Are Jerky Treats Making Pets Sick? So Who Is The E. Coli Club Now, Nancy?
by Pat_S on September 7, 2012Memo to Nancy Pelosi: The next E. coli Club meeting will be held at the Office of Management and Budget. Remember the Food Safety ModernizationAct (FSMA)? Obama signed the legislation into law in January 2011, praising it as a critically important tool to protect our nation’s food supply and keep consumers safe. Obama declared food safety to be one of his top priorities. FSMA is the first major reform of the FDA in seventy years, granting the FDA broad preventive controls and industry accountability mandates. There were many concerns from the Republicans about an overreaching bureaucracy, the cost, and the impact on smaller farms. Some of the concerns were addressed in the Tester (D-Montana) Amendment exempting small farms from many...

The FDA Wants To Regulate Your Body Cells
by Pat_S on August 8, 2012Putting aside the embryonic stem cell debate, there have been amazing advances in adult stem cell research. For example, scientists have been able to transform skin cells into stem cells and then grow heart cells in a petri dish. Skin cells transformed into beating heart tissue, fueling heart failure treatment hopes “What is new and exciting about our research is that we have shown that it’s possible to take skin cells from an elderly patient with advanced heart failure and end up with his own beating cells in a laboratory dish that are healthy and young – the equivalent to the stage of his heart cells when he was just born,” the study’s author Professor Lior Gepstein, professor of cardiology...
