Studies: Dark Chocolate Can Lower Stress & Inflammation, Improve Memory
by Tammy on April 28, 2018Because God loves us. Via UPI. Consuming dark chocolate has several benefits to brain function, including reducing stress levels and inflammation, and improving mood, memory and immunity, according to two studies. Researchers at Loma Linda University Adventist Health Sciences Center in Southern California studied how consumption of dark chocolate with a high concentration of cacao — at least 70 percent, with the rest organic cane sugar — has positive effects. The two studies were presented Tuesday at the Experimental Biology 2018 annual meeting in San Diego. In the past, research has shown that cacao is a major source of flavonoids. Because they are extremely potent antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents, flavonoids benefit brain and cardiovascular health, the researchers said. “For years,...

Chile Declares War… On Tony the Tiger
by Shifra on March 4, 2018Big food companies are “21st-century pedophiles,” and ice cream is junk food? Who knew? Via Weekly Standard. Readers will be aware of the war on junk food. We think, for instance, of former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg’s unsuccessful attempt to ban large soft drinks from the city, the FDA’s ban on trans fats, and the Affordable Care Act’s requirement that fast food chains prominently display calorie information…. But it could be worse. Compared to what the Chilean government is doing, as we learned recently from the New York Times, the United States is a libertarian paradise. “The Chilean government, facing skyrocketing rates of obesity, is waging war on unhealthy foods with a phalanx of marketing restrictions, mandatory packaging,...

Odor Prompting Hazmat Call Was Pumpkin Spice Air Freshener
by Tammy on October 6, 2017Was there a test that day? Or is there a shortage of families that enjoy baking? Via UPI. A strange smell that prompted a hazmat response at a Baltimore high school was found to have a seasonal, but not unusual, cause: a pumpkin spice air freshener. Cristo Rey Jesuit High School posted a statement on its website explaining students noticed a “strange odor” on the third floor of the school about 2:30 p.m. Thursday. Officials evacuated the school and emergency personnel including the Baltimore City Fire Department’s hazmat team were summoned to investigate the odor. “Five members of our community were transported to area hospitals as a precautionary measure,” the statement said. “After extensive testing, the BCFD determined that the...

North Korea Profits As Their Workers Prep Seafood for US & EU Consumers
by Tammy on October 5, 2017This is crazy. How long will we allow this to continue? Via AP. The workers wake up each morning on metal bunk beds in fluorescent-lit Chinese dormitories, North Koreans outsourced by their government to process seafood that ends up in American stores and homes. Privacy is forbidden. They cannot leave their compounds without permission. They must take the few steps to the factories in pairs or groups, with North Korean minders ensuring no one strays. They have no access to telephones or email. And they are paid a fraction of their salaries, while the rest — as much as 70 percent — is taken by North Korea’s government. This means Americans buying salmon for dinner at Walmart or ALDI may...

Robots Are Replacing Fast Food Workers at New Shake Shack
by Tammy on October 3, 2017Another gigantic union success pushing for the $15-an-hour minimum wage and attempt to unionize fast food service workers. These jobs were originally meant for teenagers still living at home, serving as a first-time job experience. Now, with massive immigration, they’ve been taken over by adults with families. It’s just one example of how illegal immigration has so dramatically and negatively impacted the job market and wages. Great job liberals! Via NY Post. It’s the future of fast food bytes in the Big Apple. Robots will replace humans and cash won’t be accepted at a soon-to-open Shake Shack in the East Village, reps for the popular burger chain said Monday. Customers will place orders via an app and at touch-screen kiosks...

Student Accepted at Yale After Writing about Her Love for Pizza
by Shifra on May 28, 2017I bet I could get into Yale Law School by submitting my cheesecake recipe. It’s really good. Via Circa. The dreaded personal statement and/or college statement often include questions like, “Where do you hope to see yourself in 10 years?” and “What personal experiences helped shape who you are?” Instead of adding extra pressure to an already anxiety-producing process, Carolina Williams chose to write about what she loves: ordering pizza from Papa John’s. That passion was well-received by Yale University’s admission’s office–so much, in fact, it landed her an acceptance letter to the Ivy League school, The Tennessean reported. In 200 words or fewer, Williams addressed the feelings of “joy” and “independence” she feels when she orders pizza…. Not only...

UK Doctors Now Warn About Danger of… Avocado Injury
by Shifra on May 15, 2017Just in case you don’t have enough to worry about, you can add “Avocado Hand” to your list. You’re Welcome 🙂 Via NY Post. Avocados are so dangerous, they may soon carry a warning label in the UK. Amateur cooks just can’t seem to slice up the fruit — a staple of brunch fare and Mexican food — without also chopping into their hands, according to a report from the Times of London. British surgeons have seen such a spike in the number of people who seriously injure themselves while trying to penetrate avocados’ rubbery skin and remove its finicky pit that they’ve dubbed the condition “avocado hand.”…. “We don’t want to put people off the fruit, but I think...

Dems Distressed Over Repeal of Michelle Obama’s ‘Healthy’ School Lunch Rules
by Shifra on May 2, 2017Donna Brazile calls the loosening of ex-FLOTUS’ school lunch rules “petty and vindictive.” Because for the Democrats, it’s always all about them, rather than ensuring that kids actually enjoy eating school lunches once again. Via Free Beacon. Democratic lawmakers are upset over the Trump administration’s announcement that the healthy school meal standards advocated by former First Lady Michelle Obama are being pulled back. Newly confirmed Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue announced his department is moving to “Make School Meals Great Again” by giving schools greater freedom in complying with the former first lady’s school lunch rules. The regulation on school lunches caused controversy when students complained about the quality of lunches and often referred to them as “prison food.”…. Let's...

NYT Op-Ed: Asian Salad is ‘Racist’
by Shifra on May 1, 2017No, this is not from ‘The Onion.” And I don’t think Asian salad actually has onions in it, but, yep, it’s racist. Via Free Beacon. A New York Times op-ed published Thursday night denounced the existence of Asian salad and called on restaurants to remove the “racist” dish from their menus. “Why Is Asian Salad Still on the Menu?” asked Bonnie Tsui, complaining that the common offering was “something created in the name of Asians by non-Asians [and] has become a touchstone for non-Asians.” The impetus for the piece was when Tsui came across an “Asian Emperor Salad” on the menu at a San Francisco bar…. Tsui admits that other cultures–like the Greeks–have a salad named after them. “And yet...

Mars Candy Says Skittles Not Meant for Cattle, Investigating Situation
by Tammy on January 23, 2017Hmm… Via NBC LA. A mysterious Skittles spill on a rural highway in Wisconsin is taking another twist, with Mars Inc. saying it doesn’t know why the discarded candy might have been headed to become cattle feed. The case began when a Wisconsin sheriff posted on Facebook this week that “hundreds of thousands of Skittles” had been found spilled on a highway. Later, he updated the post to say the candy had fallen off a truck on its way to be cattle feed. Only red Skittles had spilled out, and Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt joked in the post that it would be difficult to “Taste the Rainbow” in its entirety. The incident gained attention after CNN wrote about it,...

by Shifra on January 19, 2017This (kosher!) cake looks like a real “palate-cleanser” from the last eight years… Hi @realDonaldTrump! by Shifra on October 9, 2016Enjoy your cross-ant kwah-SAHNT ” with some “Moay.” Moet ! Via NY Post. Are you timid asking for the croissant at your local bakery, ashamed at your lack of French? (It’s pronounced “kwah-SAHNT” not “cross-ant” — and you should give it a try. It sounds prettier and you sound smarter saying it right.) Eggs And Bacon Bay, Australia Considers Name Change to… Apple and Cherry Pie Bay
by Shifra on September 25, 2016Yes, this is a true story. Because you can’t make this stuff up. Via WSJ. Yes, there is a place in Australia named for eggs and bacon. And yes, some people have a problem with that. It’s not the ridiculousness of the name they object to. It’s the cholesterol. Peter Coad, the mayor of the area, which is found on the island of Tasmania, has thrown his weight behind a proposal to come up with a different, healthier name. He believes this would help enhance the Huon Valley’s image as a place where foodies can load up on farm-fresh produce and seafood. “If we can promote healthy lifestyles then I think we should,” he said. “Considering the high levels of...
