Financial Times Declares China Pet Food Poisoning "Accidental"

**Click on "Read more" for info on the ban of toothpaste and catfish from China, as well as deadly puffer fish being imported as regular "monkfish."**

Sure, there's absolutely no reason whatsoever why a newspaper dedicated to business interests would make a statement completely unsupported by any facts, but would help American companies who profit from doing business with China. No reason whatsoever.

Toxic pet food dogs US-China relations

Memo to Chinese food exporters: don’t mess with America’s pets.

It was, after all, the apparent accidental poisoning of thousands of cats and dogs that first drew widespread US media attention to the failings of Chinese food safety controls last month.

Fuelled by revelations of other Chinese food problems and reports of exports of toxic toothpaste to Central America, the resultant furore is now threatening China's fast-growing agricultural export sector...[good].

Washington has already demanded tighter regulation of Chinese exporters. Democratic senator Dick Durbin has declared that “Made in China” has become a “warning label” for food sold in the US. And, US news agency Dow Jones last week ran a story considering the practicality of calls for a ban on Chinese food imports.

Such a heated reaction has taken Chinese observers aback. Food safety has long been an issue of consumer concern in China’s richer cities, but few expected the death of a reported 16 US pets to escalate [And why shouldn't they be surprised? China is a country that murders its own human citizens on a daily basis. Concern over animals must really perplex them] into the newest source of friction in ever-prickly Sino-US ties.

Beijing now appears keen to ease US and local concerns with vows of tougher food safety enforcement.

Oh good, thanks FT. We can all relax now and forget about all this nonsense about poisoned food. The Chinese promise to make it better. Whew.

Breaking: New Pet Food Recalls, Including Ferret Food

You can get more information about this and other pet issues on a daily basis at the pet forum Itchmo. Heres their post about Diamond Foods expanding their recall. (HT Pat S.)

NEW RECALL: Nutra Nuggets Lamb Meal and Rice Dry Formula for Dogs Recalled
May 22nd, 2007

We have been able to confirm that Nutra Nuggets (made by Diamond Pet Foods) is recalling their Lamb Meal and Rice Dry Formula for Dogs with the Best Buy dates of October 9-10, 2008. We spoke with a vet at the Nutra Nuggets recall line and he said that so far, they had only heard of 2 cases in which the dogs had renal diseases (confirming the news report from yesterday).

He said that it was due to cross-contamination due to food being produced for Natural Balance (Natural Balance had recalls in mid-April). At this time, he said that no other food produced by Nutra Nuggets was being recalled.

And from a few days ago, the FDA issued a press release announcing Chenango Valley Pet Foodsrecalling 8 food products affecting dogs, cats, kitten and ferrets.

Chenango Valley Pet Foods is now expanding the recall action to include those pet foods that do not contain rice protein concentrate but were manufactured during periods when rice protein concentrate formulas were processed. Pet Food Recall/Poisoned Food Updates

In addition to the FDA warning to drug makers and suppliers to be wary of a new poison from China, news continues to come in about the extent of the pet food poisoning. Here is the latest:

First, please read the up-to-date recall list of pet foods. It has expanded greatly in the last week. On May 2nd, Menu Foods alone added at least two dozen more products to the list. Please check it again to make sure your pet food is safe.
In the meantime,
the FDA is insisting
that the farms chickens who have eaten Chinese melamine-spiked feed are safe for humans to eat. They assure us that consuming animals that have the plastic in their systems won't hurt us. Just like how eating chickens who have been injected with arsenic, to improve the color of their meat, is also just fine. And people wonder why lupus, breast cancer, prostate cancer, and autism are at epidemic rates.

The new Food Safety Czar is already proving himself to a lackey of the system. Just one week after the FDA issues its warning about anti-freeze in the drug supply (an ingredient which is also used in things like food and toothpaste) Dr. David W.K. Acheson , less than a week on the job and sounding very much like Officer Barbrady, assures us it's just fine to eat imported food. (HT Pat)

Despite publicity about tainted shipments from overseas, Dr. David W.K. Acheson said Americans shouldn't fear eating imported foods. "Consumers should be reassured that the international situation is under control," he said in an interview. "We're now getting on with this proactive strategy." [...]

"Globalization of food is here. It's here to stay. We need to acknowledge that and make sure food coming to the United States is as safe as we can make it," Acheson said in a telephone interview, one of the first he has conducted since taking on the new post on Tuesday.

The AJC has a good editorial about the current situation, the new "food czar" and what really needs to be done.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution: The world's problems on our plate

The globe is our grocer.

That's a great thing, because it has given us access to a wide variety of foods in almost any season at very low costs. Last year, more than 14 percent of all the food Americans consumed (by weight) came from other countries. However, that is also a problem, because our food safety net doesn't extend across the oceans to protect Americans from adulterated and dangerous agricultural products.

n response, the Food and Drug Administration has created a new position of "assistant commissioner for food protection," or "food czar" as the post was dubbed by the media. Unfortunately, the appointment of a czar falls well short of what's needed, which is an outright revolution in how we safeguard the food supply.

Certainly, the FDA cannot protect every American from food-borne illness or death. But when you consider that more Americans die each year from what they eat than were killed in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, surely it has room to improve.

Uh, yeah.

"Menu" Pet Food Recall 2007 Details/ROYAL CANIN US ISSUES RECALL

medpets.jpg

**Bumped up. BREAKING 4/20: BLUE BUFFALO RECALLS "SPA SELECT KITTEN DRY FOOD"; ROYAL CANIN NOW ISSUES U.S RECALL. PLEASE SCROLL DOWN TO END OF POST FOR THESE AND OTHER UPDATES.

PAT S., THE TAMMY BLOG RESEARCHER ON THIS SUBJECT, RECOMMENDS THE ITCHMO PET FORUM TO GET THE BEST COMPILED LIST OF ALL FOODS AFFECTED BY THE RECALL.

Menu Foods, a company that provides store-brand dog and cat food for over 40 retailers nationwide, has issued a recall of their food after kidney failure and ten deaths of cats and dogs. If you use store brand pet food or a major brand names like Science Diet Feline Savory Cuts, Iams, Eukanuba or Mighty Dog (among others), stop using it right now until you can determine if you have affected product. Chicken and rice should do nicely in the meantime, it will be easier on their tummies than a new pet food brand switch. And I know a furry friend or two who wouldn't mind the treat :) While previous pet food recalls have involved just dog food, an important note here is that this affects both dog and cat food and a fact not being reported by many news outlets: Of the 10 deaths, 9 have been cats. This does not mean dogs are not affected, just a serious caution for cat owners as well. Here are the details:

Dog and Cat Food Recall

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A major manufacturer of pet foods sold throughout North America under dozens of store names is recalling millions of containers of its products while working to determine what caused kidney failure and some deaths of cats and dogs.

Menu Foods said Saturday it is recalling dog food sold under 46 brands and cat food sold under 37 brands and distributed throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico. The pet foods were sold by major retailers, including Wal-Mart, Kroger and Safeway.

A complete list of the recalled products along with product codes, descriptions and production dates is available from the Menu Foods website, http://www.menufoods.com/recall.

Live-Blogging of FDA Pet Food Recall Press Conference

Pet Connections was there and live-blogged the whole thing.

The issues discussed included the announcement by Royal Canin in South Africa that they received tainted *corn* gluten from China. They say only two African countries are affected. Plus, the second company supplied the poisoned food rice gluten by Wilber-Ellis in SF is "Blue Buffalo." They have recalled Select Kitten Dry Food, product code: “Best Used By Mar. 07 08 B.”

The FDA says upwards of 15,000 pets have been affected by the poisoned food (I refuse to use the word 'tainted.' It's an ineffective and diminishing euphemism for nothing less than a poisoning).

Pat S. provides some bullet points of some of the discussion:

Short version:

  • Checking all wheat and rice gluten coming from China, not checking corn gluten yet. (So far only South Africa known to be affected.)
  • Apparently entrusting companies to test and initiate recalls of any kind of contamination. Industry's responsibility to check their sources.
  • Latest info on number of illnesses and death: 15,000
  • Companies receiving tainted gluten will not be named unless they confirm product was manufactured using the gluten.
  • Can't guarantee contaminated gluten not in "diverted" into other products, i.e., human food.
  • FDA tracking disposition of pigs feed with hog feed using contaminated gluten.

Please go to the Pet Connections site and read their live-blog of the FDA conference. Lots of good information. Also, the usual Menu Food/Pet Food Recall post here in Tammy blog is being updated with more information as well.

Chinese Refuse Visas to FDA Inspectors

HT/Research by Pat S.

In an effort to determine exactly what has happened regarding the poisoned wheat gluten and rice protein from China used in pet food, the FDA wanted to go right to the source of the problem. That's not going to happen, however, because our friends the Chinese, who insist this is all a big accident, won't let us in to investigate.

This is what happens when you do business with the depraved.

Industrial chemical found in second ingredient

A lawmaker said Wednesday the Chinese have refused to grant visas to FDA inspectors seeking to visit the plants where the ingredients were made. An FDA spokesman later said the visas were not refused but that the agency had not received the necessary invitation letter to get visas.

“It troubles me greatly the Chinese are making it more difficult to understand what led to this pet food crisis,” Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., told The Associated Press after meeting with the FDA commissioner, Dr. Andrew von Eschenbach.

A message left Wednesday with the Chinese Embassy in Washington was not immediately returned.

A new revelation from another company which imports from China, Wilbur-Ellis Co in San Francisco and the source of the Diamond Foods/Natural Balance poisoning, is especially troubling:

New Pet Food Recall: Natural Balance Recalls Contaminated *Rice Gluten* Products

**Click the Menu/Pet Food Recall category link in the left hand column for all other Menu Foods and pet food recall related posts**

BREAKING NEWS April 17th: Natural Balance Recall Expands to Canned Food and Treats. (All on a HT and research from Pat S.)

Natural Balance has expanded their recall and now covers the following items for all dates:

* Venison and Brown Rice Treats for Dogs (New today)
* Venison and Brown Rice Canned Formula for Dogs (New today)
* Venison and Brown Rice Dry Food for Dogs (Reported Sunday)
* Venison and Green Pea Dry Food for Cats (Reported Sunday)

The problem stems from melamine found in the rice gluten used by Natural Balance. The ingredient was produced by a US vendor, according to Natural Balance. The recalled products were packaged by Diamond but not manufactured by them. The source of the bad rice gluten, like the poisoned wheat gluten, is also believed to be Chinese, but has not yet been named.

Natural Balance has released an announcement. Here's part of it. Plesae visit their site for complete information:

Homemade Meals for Your Pet

With the pet food recall expanding and no real answers forthcoming, I've decided it's time to introduce home-cooked meals to Sydney. Until this Menu Foods fiasco is cleared up, and we know exactly what happened and how, I think all commercial pet food should be considered risky. Now with the addition of Hill's Prescription M/D Feline dry food and wet dog food Alpo Prime Cuts, both within just the last 12 hours, I think this is going to get worse before it gets better.

So, with that in mind, I came across the Pet Diets website. I have not used them yet, but it looks pretty good. They offer information and nutritional counseling for people who want to provide home cooked meals for their pets.

If you have other resources, can contribute ideas and information about alternative foods, homemade, organic, etc., for all the readers, please do so here. Also, if you've used a group like this Pet Diets, please let us know how it was.

Another good source is the Pet Connection website. They've been doing a great job keeping people up to date on the latest. They have a blog, pet loss resources, and activism suggestions as well.
