Homeless Man Behind Viral NYPD Photo Now Shoeless Again, Demanding ‘Piece of the Pie’

The New York City homeless man – whose gift of boots from an NYPD police officer became an online sensation last week – is back on the streets with no shoes.

    I heard all sorts of invective when I said the cop was nice, naive — and wrong — to give away expensive shoes or other goods. Such goods are either stolen to be pawned or sold by the wearer for booze or drugs. Even giving food simply allows whatever money the person does get to go to substance abuse instead of food. Shelters warn NOT to give goods or money, but instead aid the person (safely) in getting to a shelter experienced in dealing with the homeless. Give to the Salvation Army or other long-established ministries.
