Anyone who says democracy is a “western” notion should take note. No one needs to ask the Nepalese if democracy is worth fighting for–after theirs was taken away, you just need to take a look at the result of their demonstrations .

The King of Nepal had dissolved their parliament in 2002, and then in January 2005 he declared a state of emergency which allowed him to seize complete power. For some reason he thought the people of Nepal wouldn’t care. He was wrong.

After weeks of seeing the lazy, spoiled and criminal march for their “rights” to continue to be lazy, spoiled or criminal (France and the U.S), it’s heartening to see the Nepalese demonstrating for something as grand and noble as a return to democracy, with many giving their lives in the process.

And after weeks of protest, what did the king have to say?

The king said he was reconvening parliament “convinced that the source of state authority and sovereignty of the kingdom of Nepal is inherent in the people of Nepal, and cognisant of the spirit of the ongoing people’s movement”.

“For him to even acknowledge there was a people’s movement, that really shocked me,” said Kunda Dixit, editor of the Nepali Times.

Perhaps he knows his French or Romanian history. Ultimately, even tyrants want to wake up with the head attached and still atop their shoulders.

So the next time someone (like Jack Chirac) complains that democracy is a “Western” notion not meant for everyone, tell that frog to visit Nepal once he’s been kicked out of office. While the Iraqis and Afghans needed a bit of a kick start from the U.S. once democracy is known, free people will indeed fight to the death for it and ultimately prevail over despots.

And there’s still one guy out there, growing increasingly frustrated, and who doesn’t quite understand why his message of death and destruction can’t hold a candle to freedom and liberty. He, too, should take note that something much bigger than his Cult of Death is winning people over.

And when even the depraved like Hamas and the murderous Sudan regime reject your arguments and distance themselves from you that pretty much makes you a pariah.

Your radio broadcasts for 4/21 and 4/24/2006 (Friday and Monday) were superb! Or as you would say “vantastic!” You did the people a great service by tying together all the information you found! I hope many have finally awakened to what has been done to our minds by the Dr.S of Leftology.

    Yes, I still love you…

Indeed , the king got to keep his throne and his head ! Good for the Nepalis for fighting for their freedom which is obviously worth fighting for to them , unlike the French who run away like frightened puppies flailing hopelessly through the streets with white flags. Well said Tammy. A refreshing thing to read about amidst what has been taking place in our streets the last few weeks.

In some measure of fairness to King Gyanendra, he’s kind of a wuss on the tyranny scale. He also got to watch firsthand as his nephew killed his brother and most of his family: I can’t imagine that kind of insane palace intrigue really makes you WANT to have absolute power, since there’s always someone else after it.

But good for the Nepalese. To quote Eddie Murphy in the rightly oft-forgotten The Golden Child, “Viva Nepal!”
