Well, death will certainly cure your asthma. That happens, you know, when you stop breathing entirely. Amazing, isn’t it, how the FDA is always too late closing the barn door, not only after the horse gets out, but kills itself? Yeah, let’s put people like this in charge of even more of our health care!

FDA: Merck drug may have suicide link

WASHINGTON (AP) – The Food and Drug Administration says it’s investigating a possible link between the allergy drug Singulair and suicide.

FDA said it is reviewing reports of mood changes, suicidal behavior and suicide in patients who have taken the drug. Singulair was drug maker Merck’s best-selling product last year.

In the past year Merck has updated the drug’s labeling four times to include information on tremors, anxiousness, depression and suicidal behavior reported in some patients.

Singulair had sales of more than $4 billion last year.

Hey! Singulair is the best allergy medication I’ve found, and nobody better try to take it away from me! And I was already suicidal before I started with the stuff, so I have no problem ignoring the voices.

…which reminds me of a joke. Did you know we’ve gotten to the point where even mental health care is being outsourced? Last week I got depressed and called a crisis hotline, and they connected me to some guy in India named Mohammed. When I told him I was suicidal, he got real excited and asked if I could drive a truck.

This is old-hat behavior for Merck. I guess they’ll never learn. A few years ago, Merck had intentionally mislabeled its then “blockbuster” product VIOXX, omitting mention of serious health risks (heart attack, stroke) associated with its use. This came back to bite Merck in the ass, of course, with a slew of lawsuits.
