Maynard’s Bargain Basement

That’s what they’re saying. The Amazon listing for McAfee Internet Security 2009 is $40. And the rebate is $40. Wow! It looks good, but proceed at your own risk.

You can get the home version of AVG for free and not have to worry about the rebates. For PCs the AVG does a good job.

As someone that works on PCs for a living, I would advise AGAINST any internet security software, especially Norton. The biggest reason is most don’t/won’t take time to learn how to properly use it. Eventually, they get a nasty trojan and it locks out their LAN or modem from the internet. I then have to spend a lot of time removing the mess, restoring their network stack and so on then listen to them whine about the cost. I then explain(or do it for them) how to secure their browser without all this mess only to have them bring it back in a month to fix yet again. Hey, it makes me $$$$.
All you need to do is leave your firewall on, set your web browser to secure and don’t clear every popup you see.
Mozilla Firefox has lots of security add-ons for free.
If you INSIST on more, use Zonealarm and actually read up on how to use it properly.

Don’t get McAfee Internet Security! I downloaded it and it immediately locked up my entire computer after installation! Yeah, and I had to hard power down my computer, it booted up again, and the entire computer locked up immediately upon launch of the McAfee security tray that takes about 15-20 seconds to load. There was ZERO way to uninstall it as the computer was completely locked up. I FINALLY was able to get rid of it after clicking at the speed of light during the 20 second window of this crap beginning to load into the system tray. I successfully got into the Startup tab of MSCONFIG after bring performing a Start, Run, msconfig command, deselected the startup for McAfee, and saved my change before the damn thing was able to load up entirely in the system tray. Hard powered down again, then was able to go in a delete all McAfee related files. McAfee Internet Security is a NIGHTMARE. So is NORTON. NORTON takes over your computer like a bunch of Kool-Aid drinkers on Heroine. I learned my lesson after I did a search on the internet about McAfee Security and the major bug listed is exactly what I experienced. Their fix? There isn’t one. Typical McAfee. I use ESET Nod32, it is ranked #1 but costs. AVG is good, but ESET NOD32 is ranked higher.
