This is great. I’m glad you posted this, because if you watch PBS’s A Capitol Fourth, the only presidents worth mentioning with quotes that defined America are Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, FDR, and JFK. Now, how predictable that is? I expect than in two years, they will add Urkel to the list, ugh.
Happy Fourth everyone!

Thanks. I take Marvin over David Archuleta any day. Although Whitney Houston’s has to be one of those at the top.
i think a great thread would be the TAMs favorite version of the national anthem.
love marvin’s read, but after 9/11, my favorite is now martina mcbride’s version.
i was at the rose bowl for a football game right after 9/11 and lila mccann sang it and it was beautiful too.

you know personally i find whitney’s voice to be lacking a certain emotional power and warmth but i know many many people love her version.

One of my favorites is Vladimir Horowitz at the Hollywood Bowl, playing The Stars and Stripes Forever, in 1945, just after we won WWII. This one was recorded from radio. In this arrangement for piano of the Sousa march, written by him in celebration of war victory and his new American citizenship, he recreated all the sounds from the marching band. Incredible performance.
chuck that was completely stunning. i never would have come across it if you had not posted it. thank you.
You’re welcome. It’s one of those performances that I don’t get tired of hearing. I’m glad you enjoyed it!
