Here’s an update on events surrounding the Islamist “cultural center” and mosque set for the Ground Zero. The center is hyped a “bridge builder” to help all the poor, infidel Americans understand how Islam is not to be feared, but embraced. You know, like how you embrace Female Genital Mutilation, beheadings, and child brides.

(via BigFurHat, of course)

Well, let all Islamists know, we have received the message and are indeed committed to building bridges and encouraging tolerance. This is why I am excited to fully support Greg Gutfield’s plan to build and open a gay bar which caters to gay Muslims right next to the tolerant Mega Mosque.

MONDAY’S GREGALOGUE: MY NEW GAY BAR

So, the Muslim investors championing the construction of the new mosque near Ground Zero claim it’s all about strengthening the relationship between the Muslim and non-Muslim world.

As an American, I believe they have every right to build the mosque – after all, if they buy the land and they follow the law – who can stop them?

Which is, why, in the spirit of outreach, I’ve decided to do the same thing.

I’m announcing tonight, that I am planning to build and open the first gay bar that caters not only to the west, but also Islamic gay men. To best express my sincere desire for dialogue, the bar will be situated next to the mosque Park51, in an available commercial space.

This is not a joke. I’ve already spoken to a number of investors, who have pledged their support in this bipartisan bid for understanding and tolerance.

As you know, the Muslim faith doesn’t look kindly upon homosexuality, which is why I’m building this bar. It is an effort to break down barriers and reduce deadly homophobia in the Islamic world.

The goal, however, is not simply to open a typical gay bar, but one friendly to men of Islamic faith. An entire floor, for example, will feature non-alcoholic drinks, since booze is forbidden by the faith. The bar will be open all day and night, to accommodate men who would rather keep their sexuality under wraps – but still want to dance.

Bottom line: I hope that the mosque owners will be as open to the bar, as I am to the new mosque. After all, the belief driving them to open up their center near Ground Zero, is no different than mine.

My place, however, will have better music.

Bravo! Three cheers for bridges, tolerance and everyone dancing in unity to KC and the Sunshine Band. Or Madonna. Or someone.

there is actually quite a largely developed body of synthy dance music in arabic and persian in particular . friends in a turkish band used to play this cd before their sets- it’s amazing and near impossible not to dance to. one of my favorite cds ever:

    yalla( lets go!) hitlist egypt:

but that’s really dated. persian discos are popular all over the world. the persian diaspora likes to get down.

gays exist in the muslim world. they find ways to drink and go to secret parties and dance- as do straight muslims. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/1493041.stm . maybe they should decide themselves what kind of gay bar would represent their own interests and desires- and maybe provoking their fellow muslims might not be what they need , want or require. i really object to westerners using marginalized persons for their own rather flippant and coy political purposes. this person is being rather ignorant or rather selfish in not realizing the true jeopardy muslim gays live under and that this sort of behavior further scape goats them in their own countries. it sounds amusing on the surface but using other people for your own objectives negates them .why would they want to be further manipulated and controlled in the western world- used as pointed sticks to stab at other muslims- where they are free and not hunted criminals?

what gay muslims need are more serious allies in the west protesting their treatment in their countries .western gays have been infuriatingly as silent about the murder of homosexuals in places like iran as the feminists have been mum about the denigration and apartheid of females. gay muslims need a voice in the west protesting their treatment not using them in a facetious manner .

i still vote for the regular good olde american gay bar and the all piggy BBQ. we want to assert our values as dominant here, not watered down versions of theirs.

thierry, I understand the concerns you expressed, but I don’t believe Muslim gays are being ‘scape-goated’ by what is essentially a ‘turn-about is fair play’ proposal. Also, one would (logically) assume that any gay Muslim choosing to patronize the establishment would do so voluntarily. I’m as straight as they come, but if I was in the area, I would make an appearance, if only to express solidarity.

      • thierry says:

how is it fair play to use a persecuted muslim minority to forward some half assed point? unless of course he is a gay muslim. is he? it’s a bi-product of oppression that makes empowered people (safe and far away from an islamic regime) feel that minorities benefit from and approve of being played as pawns.

gay muslims do have their own groups and agendas and voice- they don’t need to be dictated to and used as weapons of provocation- if he’s serious about this mess which strikes me as absurd. islamic theocracies always say they have no gays- only the depraved west offers up ‘muslim ‘queer bars. and that’s just the reasoning they use to drop walls on gays- they’ve been poisoned by the western infidels.

provoke away crusaders- they don’t care. all that’s understood and effective against them is force.

after a certain point i just feel crude fag jokes are making it seem we’re dancing on those graves along with the mosque builders. those who died on 9/11 i think deserve a bit more than that. and gay muslims deserve real solidarity – like the western countries truly addressing the human rights violations of muslim countries not forcing them to listen to lady gaga which should be against the geneva conventions.

Thierry, I was thinking someone on the lines of Amr-Diab. He has great dance music. Tammy should play some of his music, :-). I particularly love Nour-el-Ain.

      • thierry says:

Amr-diab is a huge mega star- i like his music too. one of his earlier songs is on Yalla- i love his voice. arabic male singers are not afraid to emote- sometimes they practically weep the words to songs.

there are some really strange songs on that Yalla cd- one is about a spate of women dismembering their husbands and scattering the parts in the nile. oh so osiris. but it really happened. another song is about as filthy as you can get without being beheaded- a call and response song between a male and a famous belly dancer. you do not have to understand the language to get it. i highly doubt it would be made today in egypt.

music is serious in egypt. when oum khatoum , THE female singer in arabic, died- people committed suicide across the muslim world.
