Rep. Gabrielle Giffords

Many have wondered whether Rep. Gabrielle Giffords will continue in congress and seek another term.  Yesterday, a video was released ending all speculation:

Giffords to Resign From Congress After State of the Union This Week

Whatever differences I have held with Rep. Giffords performance in congress prior to the horror of January 8, 2011, I am mindful of the fact that vagaries in life change us. Not everything is political; in fact, ‘politics’ does not matter at the end of the day. What does matter is that Rep. Giffords has beaten the odds: she not only has survived – she has surpassed!

I am impressed with Giffords’ recovery – a miracle that only God could provide. She is a living testimony, and what is also revealed is her determination to live and continue working in whatever capacity that may be.

My prayer and hope for Rep. Giffords is for the full restoration of her health and continued success in whatever path she chooses for herself. I wish only the best for her and her family.

God’s blessings to you, Rep. Giffords.

She’s stepping down…for the good of her state. Where have I heard this before, but without the praise?

One of the most poignant images from her recovery was the beautiful Southern Arizona day that they wheeled her to a balcony in the hospital and there was a picture of her husband holding her hand as they looked out onto the Catalina Mountains. I absolutely love the Catalinas, and they are backdrop in the lives of all Tucsonans. I immediately choked up at the image because as much as I love those mountains, I was a transplant had not grown up with them as a part of my life as Giffords had. I imagined how comforting it must have been for her at that moment, even though she was still unaware of the horror of the shootings, to see those majestic mountains that were the backdrop in her life. I hope, when she is able, she is able to help heal the community, unite it and reach out to everyone regardless of their politics.
