August 9th is National Day in Singapore commemorating Singapore’s independence from Malaysia in 1965. The holiday is celebrated with parades and fireworks. Faced with a declining birthrate, this August 9th Singapore citizens are asked to create some fireworks of their own—in the bedroom. Mentos, maker of breath mints, is running an ad encouraging Singaporeans to do their duty.

Celebrate national Night by giving our country the population spurt it so desperately needs.

Back to Singapore. For years it has been worried about flaccid birth rates among its people, often with an edge of eugenics thinking. So in partnership with Mentos, it’s trying a more direct and with-it approach. I don’t know what you’ll be doing on the night of August 9, but if you’re in Singapore — well, see for yourself.
