The federal government is developing a body mass index (BMI) detector intended to be available to every American “anywhere and anytime,” according to a grant awarded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The detector is expected to rely on the analysis of facial and body imagery….
“Body mass index (BMI) is a measure of the ratio between an individual’s weight and height, which is an important parameter to characterize human bodies into four categories, i.e., underweight, normal, overweight, and obese,” the grant states. “A high BMI value is associated with a higher risk for conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and certain cancers.”
“The developed technology can also improve personal health care and quality of life, and public health surveillance,” it added….

There already is a BMI detector. It’s called a scale. You step on the scale, see your weight, look at a chart for your sex and height, and voila, BMI. (The chart is other-sex sexist, because it only has male and female.) One reason they want a BMI detector is because they know that telling people to step on a scale is not scientific appearing enough. Look, it’s shiny with lights and gadgets and digits, it must be obeyed. The other larger reason is that the gov’t wants the facial identification information. Can you imagine how much more effective gun registration lists will be when you can match faces to the names. Then you can send signal to all those video cameras saying alert us when you get this face match. Big Brother loves facial identification. Obey or have your face erased from all records, You will no longer exist.
Shifra – You have hit the nail right on the head: “relocation camps for fatties”. That approach has been tried before except that it went under the name “Leben nicht lebenswert” or life not worth living. That’s right: the Holocaust started by first cleansing the mentally and physically deficient so they didn’t pollute the gene pool. Physicians and academics were the sharp point of that spear in the 1930’s. Now physicians and academics are at it in this country, but this time with obesity as the primary metric. Engineering professors are going to make identifying the undesirable in American society efficient and automated. Absolutely disgusting.
Well, Charles_PA, I don’t know what Mooch will think of my BMI, but I gotta tell ya: I do *not* look good in orange, OR in stripes. Just saying…
My BMI reading: “One person at a time, please.” (The same might be said of Mooch’s posterior.)
So, apparently fat people don’t know they’re fat. Does that make them fat AND stupid? Isn’t that insulting? Well, I wouldn’t trust the results of this BMI detector. Everybody knows the camera adds 5 to 10 pounds to your picture.
The only question then is, just how many cameras are pointing at you?
