Suspected Paris attacker Salah Abdeslam, who has been on the run for four months, was caught in police raids in the Molenbeek borough of Brussels, Belgian State Secretary for Asylum Theo Francken said.
Abdeslam was wounded and detained on Friday in the police operation, which is continuing with at least one suspect holed up in the building, L’Echo reported. The raids were being carried out in Rue des Quatre Vents, where a security perimeter was created, Belga newswire said. Francken confirmed his capture in a posting on Twitter.
The Belgian prosecutors office said earlier Friday that Abdeslam’s fingerprints were found during a house search earlier this week in another part of the Belgian capital. The raid was part of the investigation into the Nov. 13 terror attacks in Paris.
The fugitive’s prints were retrieved during a March 15 operation in the Forest borough of Brussels, the Belgian federal prosecutors office said in a statement on Friday. It hasn’t been established how old the fingerprints were or how long Abdeslam spent in the apartment on Rue du Dries…Federal prosecutors identified a suspect killed in Tuesday’s Belgian-French police operation in Forest as Mohamed Belkaid, 35-year-old Algerian national residing in the country illegally. Belkaid was “most probably” the same suspect that police said in December was using a fake Belgian identity card with the name of Samir Bouzid, the prosecutors said.
