Your Weekend Hero Story: Scuba Diver Saves Fish, Become Best Friends Forever
by Tammy on July 30, 2017Absolutely magnificent. When your trust of humanity wanes, this can be your reminder video about who we are, and who we should aspire to be. Via Nerdist. One day about 25 years ago, Japenese scuba diver Hiroyuki Arakawa was in the depths of Hasama Underwater Park in Tateyama, Japan when he spotted Yoriko, an Asian sheepshead wrasse that looked like it was hurt. So he started taking care of the fish by feeding it crabs and nursing it back to health. 25 years later, they’ve seen each other virtually every day and they’ve forged a pretty special bond. “I’d say we understand each other,” Arakawa said. “Not that we can talk to each other, but it just happened naturally. I...

Very scary for the pet mom! Via CBS News. by Tammy on May 23, 2017Not the actual hero pug, but one that probably looks a lot like him. Nice!! Via Athens Banner-Herald A small family pet chased off a trio of armed home invaders Sunday night after they attempted to rob residents at Woodland of Athens condominiums off Barnett Shoals Road, Athens-Clarke County police said. Video: Veterinarian Sings to Scared Pup Before Surgery
by Shifra on May 5, 2017Sweet! And, Ruby is reported to be doing well after her surgery. 🙂 Via UPI. A veterinarian in Colorado used his musical talents to help soothe a nervous pet being prepared for surgery. Fox Hollow Animal Hospital shared video of Dr. Ross Henderson playing guitar and serenading a dog named Ruby with Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love” to calm her nerves before she underwent surgery…. Fellow veterinarian Darcy Holloway, who captured the viral video, said Henderson’s song quickly changed the puppy’s mood. “Ruby was back there jumping on the cage and she was crying,” Holloway said. “We don’t know if it’s the one-on-one attention or if it’s the song, but they usually respond really well to it.”…. Bird Takes Wrong Turn on Way to South America, Lands in… Israel
by Shifra on April 27, 2017An amazing ability to fly long distances. But sense of direction? Not so much. Via Jerusalem Post. ….A medium-sized shorebird that typically nests in the North American tundra and in eastern Russia, the dowitcher was last seen in Israel in the Dan region in 1984, according to Jonathan Meirav, a senior ornithologist at the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel. “He probably at some point got confused along his way, and instead of migrating to the hot spots of South and Central America, took a different direction, likely connected with another species of shorebird and migrated with them for the winter to Africa,” Meirav said. “Shorebirds are strong flyers and are world-record holders in long-distance migration…. “The observation...

USDA Revokes Public Access To Animal Abuse Information
by Pat_S on February 4, 2017The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), an agency of the USDA, will no longer post public information on animal abuse. Previously, under the Horse Protection Act and Animal Welfare Act, APHIS posted reports of abuse including abuse by dog breeders, research facilities, circuses and zoos. The reports were helpful to animal welfare groups. The reason given is to protect the privacy of individuals. Information about animal abuse will now be available only through FOIA requests which are costly. APHIS says it had been considering this policy change during the past year. Critics of the decision point out that the reports almost never included personal information. Of the 7,813 facilities reported on by law, 1,200 are academic or government...

by Tammy on January 23, 2017Hmm… Via NBC LA. A mysterious Skittles spill on a rural highway in Wisconsin is taking another twist, with Mars Inc. saying it doesn’t know why the discarded candy might have been headed to become cattle feed. The case began when a Wisconsin sheriff posted on Facebook this week that “hundreds of thousands of Skittles” had been found spilled on a highway. Later, he updated the post to say the candy had fallen off a truck on its way to be cattle feed. Only red Skittles had spilled out, and Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt joked in the post that it would be difficult to “Taste the Rainbow” in its entirety. The incident gained attention after CNN wrote about it,...

Feds Threaten Florida Pet Owners With a ‘War on Cats’
by Shifra on December 5, 2016Remember when the US Government would declare war on our enemies, instead of cats? Good times…. Via Daily Signal. An overzealous federal agency is targeting Florida cats in a pest removal operation and it’s becoming a huge problem for pet owners…. In 2014, the Fish and Wildlife Service implemented a pest management plandesigned to trap cats that the agency perceived as a threat to the Key Largo woodrat. The furry targets of this sting operation were accused of trespassing on federal land, which is a woodrat habitat, and doing what cats do best: hunt and kill rats. Instead of focusing only on the large swaths of feral cats that pose the primary threat to the rats’ survival on the island,...

WaPo: Is Your Dog’s Halloween Costume Sexist?
by Shifra on October 30, 2016This column recently appeared in the Washington Post. It is not from The Onion. Really… And here is a great costume I found for dogs on Halloween. Sure to be a big hit with the “Diversity Police.” Via WaPo. Young girls may be discarding their princess wands for superhero capes this Halloween, but not so in the canine world. The glass ceiling appears to be firmly in place at PetSmart, where career costumes labeled “male” include firefighter and police officer, while female dogs can choose between a pink cowgirl costume and pink loofah. On the site BaxterBoo.com, options for your female pooch include “sweet heart nurse” or French maid. “Any tidy girl dog will look adorable wearing this French Maid...
