NYT Op-Ed: Asian Salad is ‘Racist’
by Shifra on May 1, 2017No, this is not from ‘The Onion.” And I don’t think Asian salad actually has onions in it, but, yep, it’s racist. Via Free Beacon. A New York Times op-ed published Thursday night denounced the existence of Asian salad and called on restaurants to remove the “racist” dish from their menus. “Why Is Asian Salad Still on the Menu?” asked Bonnie Tsui, complaining that the common offering was “something created in the name of Asians by non-Asians [and] has become a touchstone for non-Asians.” The impetus for the piece was when Tsui came across an “Asian Emperor Salad” on the menu at a San Francisco bar…. Tsui admits that other cultures–like the Greeks–have a salad named after them. “And yet...

California Father-Daughter Dance Renamed ‘The Family Dance’
by naga5 on March 13, 2017**Bumped Up From TAM Wire. Posted by naga5** Crocker/Riverside Elementary School will be eliminating their PTA sponsored Father-Daughter Dance and changing it to a Family Dance. This caught my attention, but not for the reason one might imagine. I attended Riverside School. Back in the Sixties, the neighborhood was very mixed. The neighborhood houses were built in the 1930s and housed a fair number of Asian families at that time. Consequently, the ethnic makeup of the school was actually quite diverse. Over the decades, the neighborhood gentrified. My mom finally moved out last year and she was probably the last one of the families I grew up with to leave. The place is now populated by families in their first...

Prof Says U. of Iowa Mascot Is Too Scary For Special Snowflakes, Er, Students
by Shifra on August 28, 2016The really scary part of this story is that the professor is an M.D. and teaches pediatric medicine in medical school. I would have been less concerned if she had been a professor of Third World Underwater Basket Weaving. Or something. Via Washington Times. A University of Iowa professor is asking the athletics department to make the university’s mascot, Herky the Hawk, display friendlier facial expressions, arguing that his angry grimace is traumatizing students. “I believe incoming students should be met with welcoming, nurturing, calm, accepting and happy messages, ”Resmiye Oral, a clinical professor of pediatrics, wrote Tuesday in an email to athletic department officials, obtained by the Iowa City Press-Citizen…. “As we strive to tackle depression, suicide, violence, and...

by Shifra on July 1, 2016“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” — George Santayana Via WSJ. A new report by the American Council of Trustees and Alumni, a nonprofit group that advocates for accountability at schools, found that just 23 of the institutions among the 76 deemed to be the “best” by U.S. News & World Report’s 2016 rankings require history majors to take at least one U.S. history course. Obama Gives Planned Parenthood $5M Grant Targeting Kids as Young as 5
by Tammy on May 17, 2016Of course he does. The bureaucracy will always award Planned Parenthood for funneling money to them through their PAC. It’s bureaucracy as Candyman, redistributing our tax dollars to their friends. And in this case, they get to help fund the indoctrination of your kids. One thing that we must influence Donald Trump on is his belief that PP deserves federal funding. The arguments against this are so persuasive, we must make a point of turning him on that issue. Via LifeNews. HT Weasel Zippers. The Obama Administration has put forth more than $5 million towards Planned Parenthood providing sex education to the children, some as young as 5, but pro-lifers and concerned parents are working to keep the abortion giant...

Happy Sexually Transmitted Infection Awareness Month
by Pat_S on April 15, 2016And happy it should be according to the twitter hashtag campaign #ShoutYourStatus. There’s too much STI and STD stigmatizing according to these devotees. As one person put it, many people are living happily with genital herpes and the world should embrace them. This is the amazing reason women are telling the world they have STIs. “So much of STI Awareness Month has focused on alarming statistics about the prevalence of STIs and fear-mongering discussion of symptoms,” Dawson told Revelist. “Meanwhile, the millions of us who live with STIs aren’t a part of that conversation.” So she and her proudly-positive friends inserted themselves into that conversation, using #ShoutYourStatus. They encourage others with STIs to proudly declare their status, in whatever way...

This study explores how perceptions and justification of surveillance practices may create a chilling effect on democratic discourse by stifling the expression of minority political views. Using a spiral of silence theoretical framework, knowing one is subject to surveillance...
