New App: Old Photos of Your NYC Location Just A Tap Away
by Shifra on August 31, 2016We all know that Tammy will be downloading this app, ASAP! Via NY Post. A decade ago, you would have to go to the New York Public Library in person to view its Milstein Division, which contains a collection of some 54,000 gripping images of New York City taken between the 1870s and the 1970s. And, after a tedious request for microfilm, you definitely couldn’t sneak a particularly compelling streetscape out of the 42nd Street branch and take it with you for a side-by-side comparison with its modern-day counterpart. But now there’s an app for that. OldNYC — which debuted in May — digitally tags each photo in the collection based on location, and clusters them at thousands of intersections...

Israeli Defense Forces Join With U.S. Marines For Joint Anti-ISIS Combat Training
by Shifra on July 28, 2016Our Marines trained with the IDF so that they can “operate cooperatively in a future war.” Future war? What war? Didn’t Obama say the world is safer now than ever before? Via Jerusalem Post. IDF special forces units teamed up with US Marines last week for a joint military exercise in the Negev Desert in part aimed at coordinating techniques for combating terrorist activities such as that of Islamic State, Channel 2 revealed Thursday morning…. Channel 2 reported that the IDF forces relayed their experience in combating regional terrorism threats to the US forces, which can apply the training to America’s fight against ISIS in the Middle East. During the exercise, the troops took part in drills simulating helicopter landings...

‘Mad Men’ Auction to Feature 1,500 Props from the Hit Show
by Tammy on May 25, 2016As a fan of the show, I see many neat things, but I have a tiny feeling they will all become outrageously too expensive. I just hope someone doesn’t pay through the nose for a box or a paperback book. Via NY Post. “Mad Men” fans will soon get the chance to literally walk in Megan Draper’s shoes — or see the world through Don Draper’s shades. ScreenBid, an online auction house that partners with Hollywood studios to sell collectibles from the set, is selling 1,500 props from the award-winning AMC show that wrapped last year. On Monday, about 50 items went up online to give fans a taste of what is to come ahead of the start of the...

Red Dot Illusion: What Do *You* See?
by Shifra on April 6, 2016No, this is not the flag of Japan. This is an optical illusion hitting the Internet. And yes, I did see a horse grazing. Really 🙂 Via Telegraph: Take a close look at the red dot – what do you see? The puzzle is the latest in a deluge of optical illusions to have flooded the internet in recent weeks and has reportedly left many divided about what they can see. Those taking the online eye test are asked: “Calm your mind and stare at this red circle. See anything?” Is it just a red dot? Is there actually an animal? Or are we just all being trolled? ….While some people apparently spend ages trying to work out the outline...

New Invention: The Electric Salted Fork
by Shifra on March 31, 2016When they invent ‘the electric ice cream spoon,’ please let me know. Via Telegraph: Sprinkling too much salt on food has long been flagged up as a dietary sin linked to a raft of health problems, from strokes to heart disease. So health-conscious salt lovers are likely to celebrate the fact that Japanese scientists have created a guilt-free way of enjoying it – by inventing an electric fork. The prototype fork creates a salty taste in the mouth at the press of a button, due to the release of an electrical current which stimulates the tongue. The device… is based on the fact that a human tongues feels salty or sour when electricity is applied to it, according to the...

[Video] Watch a US Nuclear Submarine Emerge from the Ice
by Tammy on March 22, 2016A magnificent thing. Via PopSci. X almost marks the spot. The USS Hartford’s aim was just a little off, and as the nuclear attack submarine surfaced through the ice of the Arctic circle, the view from the aircraft overhead shows a giant X carved into snow just to the side of the vehicle. The Arctic is fortunately an empty place, and precision surfacing isn’t really the point of the vehicle. Instead, it was there as part of the ICEX military exercises, practice for the coldest war of all. By breaching the ice, USS Hartford (and its compatriot, the USS Hampton, shown above) joins a long tradition of nuclear submarines in the Arctic circle. The USS Nautilus was the first to...

California Whale-Watchers Surprised By ‘Stampede’ Of Dolphins
by Shifra on March 13, 2016Beautiful! Via UPI: Whale watchers got a rare look at hundreds of dolphins during a dolphin “stampede” off the coast of Southern California. Whale watchers looking to catch a few glimpses of the animals were in for a surprise when the dolphins began racing and jumping through the water — an act called porpoising — without known reason. A video recorded by Captain Dave’s Dolphin and Whale Safari shows the pod of marine mammals speeding just off the edge of the tourism company’s vessel….

Mystery Repeating Radio Signals Detected in Deep Space
by Tammy on March 4, 2016This is the first time we’ve ever encountered signals like this. We think we know everything, but really, we know essentially nothing. Via Telegraph. E.T phoning home may be a Hollywood invention but now astronomers claim to have detected repeating radio signals from outside the solar system. The possibility of alien life somewhere in deep space remains a tantalising prospect for scientists as they continue to scan the galaxy for potential messages, or radio bursts, sent from intelligent life. And now researchers at Cornell University say they have discovered repeated 10 millisecond-long “fast radio bursts” (FRBs) after sifting through archive data caught by the Arecibo telescope in Puerto Rico. “We’re showing that whatever battery drives FRBs, it can recharge in...

Video: Bird Knocked Out After Flying Into Window, Revived By Its Friend
by Shifra on February 28, 2016We should all have friends as devoted as this bird is to its BFF. Via Daily Mail: This is the heart-warming moment a stubborn bird saved his friend’s life by trying to revive it after it hit a window. The scene, filmed in Saudi Arabia, was posted on LiveLeak by a baffled eyewitness. It shows a nervous robin slapping its wings as he tries to give its pal – who lies unconscious on its back – the ‘kiss of life’ to revive it. It is believed the other robin was knocked out by flying into a glass window…. ****************************************************

Video: German Teen Climbs Egyptian Pyramid… Illegally
by Shifra on January 31, 2016I’ve always wanted to visit the Pyramids. Although this is not quite what I had in mind. Via USA Today: “I can’t describe it in words … It was really unbelievable for me. It was absolutely amazing.” That’s how 18-year-old Andrej Ciesielski describes his incredible, yet illegal, climb to the top of the Great Pyramid of Giza in broad daylight on Jan. 18. The German tourist, who writes about the experience on his blog, says he first visited Cairo before hiring a taxi to take him to Giza. Though climbing the oldest and largest of the three pyramids could result in a three-year jail term, or something far worse if he lost his footing, “I thought the photos would be...
