Surveillance And The Culture Of Self-Censorship
by Pat_S on April 3, 2016The internet and social media have been touted as democratizing forces. A recent study suggests that knowing there is government and private cyber surveillance results in self-censorship of minority opinions and creating a dominant voice online. Under Surveillance: Examining Facebook’s Spiral of Silence Effects in the Wake of NSA Internet Monitoring Since Edward Snowden exposed the National Security Agency’s use of controversial online surveillance programs in 2013, there has been widespread speculation about the potentially deleterious effects of online government monitoring. This study explores how perceptions and justification of surveillance practices may create a chilling effect on democratic discourse by stifling the expression of minority political views. Using a spiral of silence theoretical framework, knowing one is subject to surveillance...

Quelle Horreur! Conservative Washington Free Beacon Attacks Liberals!
by Shifra on February 27, 2013**A post by Shifra** In a recent article, the NYT wrote a scathing review of Michael Goldfarb, editor of the Washington Free Beacon. Entitled, ‘A Conservative Provocateur, Using a Blowtorch as His Pen,’ the writer seems to have relied heavily on a thesaurus to maximize his use of negative depictions. For example, Goldfarb’s career did not “begin” at the Weekly Standard; rather, his career was “spawned.” His work is characterized as “weaponized journalism,” and his “signature political attack can best be described as gleeful evisceration.” And, faint praise from Ben Smith, editor-in-chief of Buzzfeed.com: “There’s something to be said for stabbing people in the front in a town where everybody goes around all day stabbing each other in the back.”...

In accordance, Obama will take time from his hectic schedule of golf and sporting event prognostication to accept an award. At first I thought the award would be for acting as though nothing serious is happening, but no. The award is from a group of journalists promoting government transparency. Close Encounters of the Democrat Kind
by Pat_S on August 5, 2009A post by Pat Ordinary people who may or may not have joined recently formed grassroots groups to get together in opposition to the healthcare takeover are being belittled and dismissed. Aside from the “unruly mobs” smear, it is the simple fact of any kind of organization that supposedly undermines the credibility of these people. As though all those protests we’ve been seeing over the last 50 years from the Left were spontaneous with individuals suddenly impelled by unseen forces to go to the same street corner with the same signs. The people are criticized for organizing while the Democrats plot this kind of meticulously organized onslaught. Strategic Communications Plan for August: Health Insurance Reform To: Democratic Members of Congress...

What’s Being Said About Palin’s Announcement
by Pat_S on July 3, 2009A post by Pat I pulled a random sampling from RSS feeds on what’s being said about Palin’s announcement. Nobody likes a quitter, Sarah Palin …save Sarah Palin the hassle of having to grind out the acrimonious end of her term in Alaska, battling Democrats and batting down frivolous ethics complaints as conservatives battle each other over her role. But how can leaving office early help her with her greatest deficiency as a presidential contender ” a lack of experience on big issues? from Lucianne.com News Forum Rock bottom: HuffPo poster bids Palin farewell with retard jokes Don’t be too quick to blame all liberals for this excrescence. […] from Hot Air Krauthammer on Palin: She’s young, she’ll be back...
