(Comic HT to Kim)

I’ve done it. I have joined my local iPhone line. I chose the AT&T store instead of the Apple store simply because I thought it would be less busy. And I think I may be right. Currently there are probably 50 in line and we have an hour to go–6pm–when the iPhones are released.

While in line here, I spoke via phone with Andy Shibley, Vice President and General Manager of Greater Los Angeles, AT& T. I asked him about iPhone and its relationship with AT&T. One concern I had was based in the concern about the power/strength/viability of the AT&T wireless signal. The VP noted that they’re always working on the quality and people will be happy.

That’s good enough for me.

What I couldn’t get out of him was the number of this first run of iPhones, nor would he give me a timeline of how long it would take if we had to make a reservation for one if we didn’t get it today. I suppose I’m not anxious about that because I do feel very confident about getting it today.

Here’s some coverage of the iPhone sales on the East Coast.

Send good vibes. I will report back soon.

UPDATE:

I got it! But…I originally wanted the 8gig but they ran out so I got the 4gig, which is actually all I need. I had fun in the line with all the peeps, but once I got inside the At&T store, well, it was a nightmare. It wasn’t a nightmare for everyone, mind you, just me and one other couple who got the “slow” computer stations, with, in my case, the equally as “slow” helper-guy.

My guy was the sort who never closes his mouth. It was open, all the time. Now, mine usually is, too, but that’s because I’m saying something. This was the open-mouthed-stare look, where drool could be an issue, which is bad. Overall, boy, do I have stories for tomorrow’s Tammy Radio. I’m really tired right now, but of course I have activated it and played with it a bit, and it is incredible. I have no regrets.

Tonight, I’m hitting the sack early. No Girl Bar for me. No dancing girls, or loud music or flashing lights. Nope, the Friday night Club Gitmo will have to wait for next week. Chez Syd and Snoop is where I’ll be. Me and my new gadget.

We’re All iAmericans Now

Today’s the big day when the iPhone becomes a reality and The Los Angeles Times has an editorial about the phenomenal device that goes beyond, as my friend Gary says, “the mere promotional passion for the iPhone” and into the realm of profound societal reverence.

The Times thinks that the iPhone is not only a product of Apple’s genius, but also a “coming-of-age moment for computers and the Internet.”

  1. I was going to kid around with you about standing in line for a $600 phone, but there’s one on Ebay right now being sold by some guy in Connecticut that has been bid up to $18,000 with 16 hours to go. He says he’s number 25 in line.

That makes you one smart cookie!

It better make really good coffee!!

    Enjoy the new toy!

50 in line you say? Tammy, we drove accidentally around the corner in Friendship Heights (which is the Rodeo Drive of Washington DC, with yes, ALL of those designer’s stores) and the line was much, much more, holding up traffic on Wisconsin Avenue – and then the TV cameras came on and one fellow came out with the first phone and applause. I honestly thought I had driven west and back in time, at the release of Paris Hilton from jail.

  3. My mind is now numb. With 15 hours to go, that ebay auction is up to $35K

    Come on now.

I’d post the link, but it shouldn’t be too hard for anyone to find.
I wonder if the “winner” will pay up or welch!

I will be getting an iPhone in the near future I hope.

Let us know what happened, how it went, how you are and also..”Can you hear me now?” Have fun with your new phone..Details..details..and I am offcially jealous.

Any Fox News is reporting Glasgow Scotland attempt to blow up the airport terminal, the same method reported yesterday as in London friday 6-29-07; You’ll have to be busy; I’ll be on your site Saturday to get your comments…thanks Tammy

Isn’t it nice to make history?!
It’ll be cool to be able to say 30 years from now that, “Yea, I was one of those people who stood in line for one.” And in so doing, cheered on the creativity, brilliance, and advancement of mankind.

    Bah Humbug

I love you, Tammy, but what do you bet some of the idiots waiting in line to pay $700 for a phone ($500 or $600 plus tax, plus the $36 start-up fee and the first monthly charge of $60, plus the fact that you have to sign a 2-year contract with AT&T) that they’ll get tired of within 6 months are the same sort who will be whining in two weeks about how we need socialized medicine because they can’t afford health insurance?

    Other insenstive thoughts:

-I guess I don’t even understand the hype here. My friend has had a Palm phone for years that has a touch screen and is also a PAD.

-How many people are going to commit suicide when their precious iPhonies get lost or stolen?

-If I were Apple, I would have charged $1500 for this thing. I bet just as many sheeple would have lined up to buy it.

-Americans have always been rightfully appalled at the images of Soviet citizens waiting in line for “free” bread. Why is it that some of us are waiting in line to pay for overpriced gagets?

-What if the iPhone turns out to be a radioactive terrorist weapon?

-I can’t wait until Apple and Glock release the iGun.

Congrats, Tammy! Geeks rule, can’t have too many gadgets. Well, maybe we can. Can reach overkill at some point. Enjoy. ASHLEYMATT got me. I thought he was “sour-grapes” ranting but he made several valid points, though definately from a very negative viewpoint. Until the last line. The iGun. Good thing I didn’t have a mouth full of coffee. I’da sprayed my monitor and keyboard for sure (IT would not have been happy with me…). Well said ASHLEYMATT. I’m still chuckling/guffawing/chortling on that one!

  11. Kimj7157 says:

Congrats on your latest gadget acquisition. When you gotta have it, you gotta have it.

I must say I am surprised–and relieved. The reports of “geek violence” (on a day when emotions were running so high) were VERY low. (There’s nothing more dangerous than a rampaging geek.) Guess all that extra security paid off.

    🙂

Tammy I am typing this comment from mom’s new iPhone. It is a pretty awesome handheld computer. My family are all Mac fans and my parents like the phone!

    We love your geeky ways.

  13. Carpediem says:

I’m with Matt on this one, I just don’t get it but hey, to each his own. This is what America is all about. Capitalism at it’s best. I love the fact that one can become a gazillionaire making a fortune off of the people who are willing to pay tremendous amounts of money for their product. More power to em’. Freedom to choose baby, that’s what makes America great. Pardon me while I go call my mom on my 3 year old Cingular phone that I think may even have a camera thingy built in but I’ve never used it 😉 Teri

  14. PeteRFNY says:

I think I’ll wait a bit on this gadget. Right now I’m having a hard enough time with the iMortgage!
