Time cover story: Palin in Progress: What Does She Want?

Time Q&A: Q&A: Sarah Palin on Obama and Her Own Future

What do you think of Obama’s presidency thus far?

Two words: Jimmy Carter.

Why do you think you can beat Barack Obama?

In 2012, Barack Obama will have what he did not have in 2008: a record in office. Americans have seen over the past two years what that record is and what he really stands for. My vision of America is diametrically opposed to his. He sees America as the problem. I see America as the solution — if only our creative energy, ingenuity, and entrepreneurial spirit were not shackled and stymied by government. He believes in radical transformation to move us in the direction of the failed ideologies that so many of our allies in Europe are now trying to shake off as they face economic turmoil. I believe in restoration of the time-tested principles of the free market and individual liberty that have historically made us free and prosperous and peaceful and strong — as “the abiding beacon of freedom” and “the last best hope of earth” that Reagan and Lincoln called us.

The Time/CNN article by Jay Newton-Small on Sarah Palin read fair & balanced. It is the next best thing to Sarah’s 2 books, Going Rouge and America by Heart. Sarah has no hidden agenda. I recommend the article and Sarah’s books are fascinating. Look see.

When reading about Richard Wolffe making fun of Sarah Palin for reading C.S. Lewis (whose work I love as well), it actually made me feel sorry for Wolffe and even kind of laugh at him a little as just a few nights ago, I was reading the first chapter of I Corinthians (a letter written by the Apostle Paul) which pertains exactly to this superior mindset of the self-important.

The intellectual elites of today are no different than those in Paul’s day. They looked down on a segment of society as subhuman and intellectually inferior while also having immense pride in themselves for their expansive vocabulary and lofty rhetoric. These arguments also persisted within the church of Corinth at that time and it was Paul who delivered the message I leave with you all today to ponder as we see the continued attacks on Palin for her faith, inspiration and worldview. Well, let’s be honest: it’s not just Palin being attacked; it’s everyone who holds a similar view or espouses faith.

This begins with I Corinthians 1:18 and proceeds to vs. 29:

“The message of the cross is foolish to those who are headed for destruction! But we who are being saved know it is the very power of God. As the Scriptures say, ‘I will destroy the wisdom of the wise and discard the intelligence of the intelligent.’

“So where does this leave the philosophers, the scholars, and the world’s brilliant debaters? God has made the wisdom of this world look foolish. Since God in his wisdom saw to it that the world would never know him through human wisdom, he has used our foolish preaching to save those who believe. It is foolish to the Jews, who ask for signs from heaven. And it is foolish to the Greeks, who seek human wisdom. So when we preach that Christ was crucified, the Jews are offended and the Gentiles say it’s all nonsense.

“But to those called by God to salvation, both Jews and Gentiles, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God. This foolish plan of God is wiser than the wisest of human plans, and God’s weakness is stronger than the greatest of human strength.

“Remember, dear brothers and sisters, that few of you were wise in the world’s eyes or powerful or wealthy when God called you. Instead, God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose things that are powerless to shame those who are powerful. God chose things despised by the world, things counted as nothing at all, and used them to bring to nothing what the world considers important. As a result, no one can ever boast in the presence of God.”

There is nothing wrong in expanding our knowledge at all and that’s not the point of the biblical reference, but it does call into question our motivation behind the wisdom we seek: for whose will and purpose? Knowing that Palin is guided by her faith and puts her cares in God’s hands, she is motivated by a divine will and purpose that go far beyond her own. Therefore, she is a happy woman who is grateful for her lot in life and it shows. How very unsettling it must be for someone as Wolffe or any number of self-important snobs to witness a genuinely happy person whose motivations have nothing to do with their plastic bubble!

‘Had the same reaction to Wolffe’s derision. Wolffe sure made it look like he wasn’t aware of how pathetically uninformed he projected himself to be. However…

There’s NO WAY a pointy-headed “news commentator” from the UK doesn’t at least have a working knowledge of C.S. Lewis and his works. Betcha he acted that way thinking that the “tea-party” types wouldn’t know who C.S. Lewis is either.
      Boy was he wrong.

      • eMVeeH says:

        “…………….?!”
Lewis, Oxford U, Wolffe…from, in, the UK, Kiddo. Wolffe is either ignorant or playing the fool is in regards to his fellow country man.

  4. MaccabeeMaven says:

Man, that Time Magazine cover is truly something. Not only does the one-eye depiction reveal a great deal about Time‘s biases, but the paint-by-number motif objectifies Governor Palin and implies that she someone else’s work.

  5. thierry says:

“The man who uses his intellectual superiority like a goad is as guilty… as the man who bullies others by the strength of his arm.”
