Cows have friends and undergo stress if separated from them. An animal welfare scientist suggests if farmers could keep cows grouped with their friends it could reduce stress and improve milk production. Good luck with that given modern farming methods.

Northampton scientist discovers proof cows go moo-dy without friends

A scientist from Northampton has found the best way to keep cows happy is to make sure they are not split up from their friends.

Mrs McLennan said: “We know re-grouping cows is a problem, because there’s a high level of stress among animals as they try to integrate into a new group.”

She now hopes her suggestion that cows who like to stay with their friends when they are separated from the herd will be taken on by the dairy industry.

Makes me a little sad knowing how unlikely it is for the cow friends to stay together.

Imagine how stressed this little fella was. Fortunately for him a human friend came along just in time.

Several years ago my Uncle Carl had a small dairy farm. He milked about 30/day. Two of his cows were besties. As some of you may know, cows enter the barn in the same order each day. They somehow know what order they go in…..well these girls would not go out to the pasture after milking until they could leave together. The first one milked would wait next to the barn door for her pal to finish & come out of the barn. Then they walked out to the pasture together. My Uncle named the pair “Laverne & Shirley” This is one of the reasons that I LOVE COWS!!! : )
