Jihadist Militant Forces Advance To 100 Miles Outside Baghdad
by Pat_S on June 11, 2014ISIS (The Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant, a.k.a. ISIL) is a fairly new and rapidly growing Sunni jihadist group. Their goal is to establish a new Islamic Caliphate. It claims to have fighters recruited from all over the world. Their leader, 43-year old Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, is a battlefield commander and tactician. Young jihadis appear to find Baghdadi a more exciting leader than the Islamic theologian Ayman al-Zawahiri who leads al-Qaeda. ISIS in its short existence since 2013 has already built a reputation for brutality. The group controls many areas in Syria. Torture and summary executions are commonplace. Amnesty International reports that children as young as eight are abducted and imprisoned under cruel and inhumane conditions. ISIS operates...

Periodic Table Code Causes A Reaction: Girl’s Graduation In Jeopardy
by Pat_S on May 20, 2014Paris Gray appears to me to be a model student. She is the senior class vice president. She is involved with Students Against Drunk Driving and other organizations. She was scheduled to deliver an inspirational talk at her upcoming high school graduation. Now she’s in trouble because of a clever message she entered in her yearbook. When the going gets tough, just remember to Barium Carbon Potassium Thorium Astatine Arsenic Sulfer [sic] Uranium Phospheros [sic].” The periodic symbols for these elements spell out a message: BaCK ThAt AsS UP. This phrase happens to be the title of some twerk verbal sewage which passes for musical entertainment these days. I’m not even sure the school administration went so far as to...

Russian-Made Engines for US Rockets Under Review
by Pat_S on March 12, 2014The Russian-made RD-180 rocket engine is a core element of the Atlas V launch vehicle. Atlas V rockets are used to launch military and spy satellites into space. The RD-180 engines are built in Russia by NPO Energomash and provided to United Launch Alliance (ULA), a joint venture between Boeing and Lockheed Martin. ULA has a monopoly on the Atlas V national security launches. When the joint venture was formed in 2005, Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) challenged the arrangement on anti-trust grounds but lost. Now, the Air Force is initiating a wide-ranging review of its launch plans for 2017 and beyond. SpaceX is again seeking the opportunity to compete with ULA. As part of the Air Force review, the...

Union Diagnosis: Obamacare Irony (Income Inequality Made Worse) Bad For Workers
by Pat_S on March 10, 2014It’s been said that humor brings insight and tolerance where irony brings a deeper and less friendly understanding. United Here, a union representing 300,000 workers, has discovered unhealthy levels of irony in the Affordable Care Act. The union takes notice that the Obama administration is trying to shift the conversation away from the health care law to friendly Democrat issues such as income inequality. The irony, as they call it, is that the ACA will actually worsen income inequality. The Irony of ObamaCare: Making Inequality Worse The promise of Obamacare was the right one and the hope for extending healthcare coverage to the un-and under-insured a step in the right direction. Yet the unintended consequences will hit the average, hard-working...

Brits Getting Pseudonymized
by Pat_S on January 19, 2014Soon drug companies, insurance companies, researchers and others will be able to pay to access NHS records from a national database called care.data. An application to obtain information will have to be approved. There are five reasons why data can be accessed: health intelligence, health improvement, audit, health service research and service planning. That narrows it down, doesn’t it? Data identifying the patients will be scrubbed, but not enough to assure complete anonymity. The scrubbing process is referred to as “pseudonymisation”. NHS patient data to be made available for sale to drug and insurance firms Harvested from GP and hospital records, medical data covering the entire population will be uploaded to the repository controlled by a new arms-length NHS information...

On a Binge: State Dept. Spends $180,000 On Liquor Before Gov. Shutdown
by Pat_S on December 3, 2013When it comes to making a good impression on foreigners, candy is dandy, but liquor is quicker. That’s pretty much the State Department’s justification for running up the tab on booze just before the government shutdown this fall. Running up the tab: State Dept. bought $180,000 in liquor before shutdown “The United States wishes to make the best impression in its dealings with foreign governments and other groups and carries out lawfully its representational activities, including its diplomatic receptions, in as effective and as culturally appropriate a manner as possible,” the statement read. While the rest of the government prepared to shut down this fall, the State Department was busy stocking up on embassy liquor supplies. In September, the final...

Eagle Steals Camera, Records Selfie
by Pat_S on December 3, 2013And why not? The scenery is fantastic. After the eagle lands, wait for it, wait for it…. Bird steals camera in Australia, records journey A brazen bird snatched a video camera that was recording crocodiles in northwest Australia and captured fascinating footage of its 110-kilometer (70-mile) journey across the country’s remote landscape. Wildlife rangers in Western Australia’s Kimberly region released video on Monday that reveals the sea eagle’s caper. The bird’s flapping wings can be seen as it grabs the device and takes off, and the eagle later poses for a selfie, poking its face into the camera lens. Uh oh, maybe this gives the NSA an idea.

Stop China From Killing Our Pets
by Pat_S on October 23, 2013The FDA is asking for public cooperation in tracking down the cause of dog and cat illnesses relating to jerky treats. The symptoms are decreased appetite, decreased activity, vomiting, diarrhea (sometimes with blood or mucus), increased water drinking, and increased urination within hours of eating the treats. Sixty percent of the cases involved gastrointestinal illness, 30 percent kidney and urinary systems, the other 10 percent a variety of symptoms such as collapse, convulsions or skin issues. From the FDA: Why Are Jerky Treats Making Pets Sick? The agency has repeatedly issued alerts to consumers about reports it has received concerning jerky pet treat-related illnesses involving 3,600 dogs and 10 cats in the U.S. since 2007. Approximately 580 of those pets...

Extra Special Ops – Military Veterans Go After Child Pornographers
by Pat_S on October 21, 2013The H.E.R.O. Corps program is a privately funded endeavor which hires and trains wounded veterans to detect online child pornographers. The Department of Homeland Security has now launched a pilot program using H.E.R.O.s (Human Exploitation Rescue Operative) to assist in criminal investigations into child pornography and online child sexual exploitation. The first group of H.E.R.O.s was sworn in on Friday. Vets join fight to find, capture child predators “The goal of this initiative is to give our nation’s military veterans a chance to continue to serve at home for a righteous cause,” said acting Homeland Security Secretary Rand Beers. “Through this program, they are trained to fight on a new battlefield to protect the innocence of children at home and...

Have Gun, Will Travel
by Pat_S on September 5, 2013Obama is now tweeking his red line statement. He wasn’t speaking for himself necessarily. He’s the man with the world on his shoulders doing the right thing for humanity, or just another day at the office as Obama sees it. The administration claims we really do have a lot of countries behind military action against Syria. We can’t actually see them for a number of reasons explained behind closed doors, but John Kerry wants us to know the supporters are there. In fact other Middle Eastern countries are so into military action they are willing to pay the entire cost of an invasion,or as Kerry prefers to say it, “the whole thing the way we’ve done it previously in other places”....

Detroit: City Of The Living Dead
by Pat_S on August 30, 2013How bad can it get? Detroit couldn’t buy more paper to issue death and birth certificates. Death (certificates) took holiday in wake of bankruptcy filing Detroit’s funeral directors received this unusual text message last month. “FYI, city of Detroit can’t process death certificates because they have no paper and don’t have money to buy any.” The message, from a fellow funeral director, was mostly true: The city did stop issuing certified copies of birth and death certificates on July 23, days after the July 18 bankruptcy filing. That day, a nervous paper vendor demanded cash — and the city wanted to do business as usual, on credit. The paper is special and unique to each jurisdiction so Detroit couldn’t borrow...

Non-English Speakers May Serve On Juries In New Mexico
by Pat_S on August 14, 2013New Mexico was a heavily Spanish speaking area before it became part of the United States in 1911. It still is. Since many residents spoke only Spanish at the time New Mexico became a state, the state’s constitution made special mention of their civil rights. Moving right along to the next century, the New Mexico Supreme Court recently ruled on a case that non-English speaking New Mexico citizens may not be barred from serving on a jury. The case in question involved a Spanish speaking prospective juror who at first said he could adequately understand the proceedings and later said he could not. He was dismissed. The accused was convicted of murder and then appealed on the grounds that the...

The Reality Game You Can’t Miss
by Pat_S on July 18, 2013Following is a video game. Well, not technically a video game like Call of Duty or Grand Theft Auto. You can play the game using the video if you have a friend with you. You don’t have to pause to play the game. You can watch the video by yourself because you actually play the game everyday. You may or may not be aware that you are playing the game. If you are aware, I’ll bet you don’t like it, but you play it anyway. You have to. Don’t skip the video. Watch it and then continue reading. The Two-Minute Game that reveals How People Perceive You …. …. …. That’s right, the game of Political Correctness. The object of...

Whole Foods – Healthy Speaking
by Pat_S on July 6, 2013Whole Foods established a policy of English only for its employees while they are on the clock. The exception would be if a customer spoke a different language. Employees can speak any other language during their breaks or if everyone present is agreeable. Two employees in New Mexico objected to the policy. They were suspended with pay for one day for rude behavior in an office. (Not sure what that means unless they had a belligerent attitude while complaining.) They claim they were punished for speaking Spanish. Hispanic groups threatened to boycott Whole Foods. Whole Foods restated their policy to clarify that it applied during working hours which did not include break time or lunch time or before and after...
