But isn’t it time for this thing to just be gone? I realize it already has been somewhat marginalized, but really now, enough already.

My thoughts exactly, also the reality shows need to stop. Tv has changed so much, it’s sad. There aren’t any good shows on tv anymore. Even the cable shows aren’t that great.

Time for this thing to be gone ??? Hell no, bring on the bathing suits baby !!!!….teri

  3. Lostridley says:

Different strokes I suppose. It is rediculous and cheesy, but some of these women do manage to bring support to some very important causes.

Basically a non-issue for me, I’m not watching.

At least the promoters, sponsors and viewers realize (unlike certain other entities of the MSM) the MAP has been marginalized and accept it. And for looking “aggressively cute” the lucky girl gets a $30,000 college grant plus a coast-to-coast year-long combo speaking tour w/meal ticket. Hey, it’s better than working. And no, I didn’t watch the show.

I was born in 1950 and even as a kid and a teenager the whole thing struck me as rather lame. But the thing I’ve always noticed is that the fans of such things are not drooling males, the fans are females. A woman is much more likely to watch such a show than a man.

My take on the whole deal is that they don’t hurt anyone and they enjoy what they’re doing, so why should I care. I wish them well.

So old, tired and out of touch. I had no idea it was still going on! Way past time to cancel this archaic show.
I can’t understand the mentality of the women who enter this pageant, other than the money!

Gotta be Devil’s Advocate on this one…the Miss America Pageant is right up there with Mom and Apple Pie. I always looked at the marginalization as something like the Miss America – whose pageant has been shipped off to cable while the broadcast networks keep feeding us things like Reality Shows, Geena Davis as President and Desperate Housewives – as a sign of the times changing for the worse, not better.

Peterfny, you took the words right out of my mouth. I was going to say something about young girls needing an image of beautiful, educated women as opposed to what they see in music videos, Desperate Housewives, and those mindless, sexual teen movies.

I always liked the highlights (swimsuits) but never cared for the whole idea of the pageants. That is until I met a pageant Queen. There is a lot of money in these pageants on the State level. I have to admit I didn’t “get it” really… but for those that do, it is intense.

As for the women and young girls that participate, they aren’t my kind of people (they wouldn’t care for me either) but their intentions are good.

I know some adolescent teenage girls that absolutely love to watch these pageants. I say keep the pageants as long as you don’t lose the swimsuits!

I think those “LittleMiss” pageants are disgusting. And I just don’t get those “Cheer” team contests.

  11. LesbianNeoCon says:

I don’t think I have ever watched a Miss America pageant. They’re all too skinny (I like some meat of them bones!), and quite Stepford Wife-like. Kinda spooky.

  12. Mighty Mouse says:

I think it’s silly and ridiculous, and sometimes quite awful. We can talk about bringing it back when servile males parade around in g-strings like objects, and say dithering things for applause.

  13. Russ says:

Interesting that women make up most of the live audience at Miss America events. One can only hope that these aren’t young and impressionable young women who view such as represntative of the ideal woman. Miss America often gives the impression that intellect and physical beauty are mutually exclusive as are emotional depth and beauty. Also implied are passivity and subservience. Most of the women I know find such stereotypical portrayals galling. So do I.

    Mighty Mouse:

Do you really want to see a bunch of men strutting around in G strings? Eeeeewwwww!!!

In seriousness though, women are the audience for Miss America, not men. What do you think that means? The only equivalent I can think of is the Mr. Universe competition, which is kind of a man thing. (Come to think of it, that is a bunch of men strutting in a G string and saying stupid things, it just doesn’t get any air time)
