Gratuitous For-No-Good-Reason Pic of Charlotte Rampling Because I Refuse To Post a Pic of An Oscar Statue

This Open Thread (where you can post whatever you like) is for those of you who insist on watching and don’t want to feel all alone as you scream at the TV. I still hope you boycott it. So, if you are, feel free to use this thread to tell people what you’re doing instead. I was going to live-blog it but I just couldn’t bring myself to do it. I will, however, so all the rest of you don’t have to, watch the thing. I do have a tiny feeling, however, that tonight’s little shindig of gold-leaf eating hand-wringing self-righteous socialists (ooh, hyphen mania!) will give me plenty to talk about on Tammy Radio.

And while I won’t be live-blogging, Pajamas Media is, with The Manolo, Jeff Goldstein, two Gay Patriots, Andrew Leigh, Stephen Green and Fedora Man!, beginning at 5pm PT.

Nikki Finke also has plenty to say.

Oh, and don’t miss Roger L. Simon‘s rant on how the Oscar parties have completely screwed up his neighborhood and his sleep. Priceless.

UPDATE 8:30pm:

It’s finally over. I have to confess, I did live-blog a little, all of which is in the Comments section. Generally, I thought the whole thing seemed awkward to me somehow. Is it possible everyone got a sense that they have finally gone too far? That their industry, their careers, and their futures actually do belong in our hands and that, somehow, has just registered?

Now we must find out what the ratings have been for this thing. The “hundreds of millions” of viewers a few of the presenters noted, or perhaps just a tad (a lot?) fewer than that? Let’s hope so.

My overall review–a neurotic show, with a few beautiful women, but vapid in content and irrelevant in general. There was no truly good humor, and those montages they kept playing of the great movies from the past just reminded us how much Hollywood has declined.

And when you think of it, there are simply no more “stars.” Interestingly enough, someone like Charlotte Rampling, the muse for this thread, is representative of perhaps the last of a truly glamorous generation.

Thank goodness, though, they went to air earlier than usual. Now I can take my Tylenol PM and get a good night’s sleep so I can be awake for my Fox appearance tomorrow.

Good night everyone.

I will not be watching them either. Right at the moment I’m watching ‘Patton.’ It is a great movie. Some of the speeches Patton has reflect our army and the soldiers who are the thin green line between ths Islamic Fascists and a free world.

“No b*****d ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb b*****d die for his.” Patton

  2. JJJet says:

I don’t think you really need a good reason to post a picture of an attractive woman, after all your pictures are here already and you have posted those pictures of the beautiful Emma Peel, er…, Diana Rigg. What is a picture of another beautiful woman.

Jon Stewart is boring me. And his Democrats comments sren’t going over well with the Democrat audience. I like his attitude but his approach, well, he seems really nervous. Of course, the Dick Cheney joke gets a big laugh.

  4. ltlme says:

Well, apparently Ms. Cuckoo for Coco Puffs is in the news again. I found an article while going through Yahoo News today. The title made me chuckle, ‘Peace Mom’ Still Campaigning Against War. Yes, let us all put her on a pedestal, shall we?
One quote that really annoyed me was:
“I really have to stay focused every day on my mission. That’s bringing the troops home. This war’s illegal and immoral and my son should be alive and nobody else should be dying,” she says.
(let me get out my violin)

I started typing out a reaction to her quote that was about to turn into a novel itself. After hitting the delete button, my response will be kept simple:
This woman needs a freakin’ reality check!!!

Since I’m too inept to figure out how to hyperlink the article, I’ve included the full address below:

Great. Now they’re making all Westerns gay. Remember the key to Malignant Narcissism–the belief that everything is about you, or revolves around you. So, gays see themselves in everything. Of course.

  6. Tammy says:

Ah, they’re now playing background music behind Clooney’s acceptance speech! And now he says they are out of touch in Hollywood, which is good, and how they talk about all sorts of things that aren’t popular. So it’s good to be out of touch, he says. He’s “proud to be out of touch.” Wow, talk about being on another planet. He really needs to get over himself. Sometimes George, being out of touch means you’re, uh, wrong.

  7. Carpediem says:

Patton was a great movie. George C. Scott was excellent as Patton. Do you think wacked out Hollywood will remake that movie portraying Patton as gay ?

  8. helengal says:

Wow, I’m really pleased to have found this site! Tammy, I used to listen to you on KFI and was sorry to see you go. I’m a recovering Californian and live in Texas now. It’s a treat to see you on the Fox New Channel which I currently have on and am watching War Stories. It looks like it’s about actors who have served in war. Not like the sissy actors of today!

  9. Tammy says:

Ben Stiller in green lycra. Not funny.

  10. Tammy says:

If you’re not watching the Oscars you made the right choice. I am now drinking a glass of wine.

  11. Tammy says:

The Wallace & Gromit guys seem really nice.

  12. Tammy says:

Naomi Watts is hot. Introducing a nominated song, Watts she says she’s “admired Dolly Parton my whole life.” Hmmm…

  13. helpunderdog says:

Do you feel the tension in the theater? No one wants to laugh too loudly or show much pleasure. Isn’t that great?! Let ’em squirm!
Due to new media, America is now aware of what a fraud the whole enterprise Hollywood has become – and they feel the heat, ha!
And the awards? – good ol’ boys glad handing each other.

  14. Tammy says:

Lily Tomlin sitting next to Meryl Streep. Hmmm….

  15. helpunderdog says:

Does anyone think the HUGE bow on Theron’s shoulder is fashionably appealing???

  16. JJJet says:

I’m watching Fox News right now. Ollie North is talking about Hollywood in WW2. He went through several actors who went to war, several as marines in the Pacific, Lee Marvin, Cliff Robertson, Tony Curtis(Navy), Now Jimmy Stewart flying Bombers over Germany. No special treatment for these guys. Tony Curtis in Tokyo Bay at the surrender.
The girly men of Hollyweird have no experience because those who went before them made the world safe for them like our soldiers are today.

  17. helpunderdog says:

According to the Western gay bit, because the Wallace and Gromit guys radiantly beamed at each other while hoisting their oscars, they must be gay.

  18. Terri says:

I have fond memories of watching the Oscars with my mother as a little girl. We’d love to see the gowns and the comedy was great with Johnny Carson. There was class, glamour and foul ups that were entertaining and we felt connected with the rest of America while watching. Mom is long gone and what I’ve seen tonight I would not want to share with my daughter. I’m almost embarrassed for them – almost. This “show” is worse than I thought it would be – my hopes were not high. Never mind, I’m sure George and the rest of the elites know better than I. Thank you Tammy for a great website!

  19. helpunderdog says:

Wait, back up, what was that?? That Goodnight short segment, was it a commercial?? In-your-face-America- if you won’t see it in the theaters, we’ll slip it to ya.

  20. Talkin Horse says:

Let’s all cruise over to Tammy’s place and sit on her couch and tune in the Oscars with the sound off, drinking wine and martinis and editorializing loudly. A kind of participatory Mystery Science Theater, if you recall that fun little show. A not-watching-the-Oscars party. What are we waiting for??

  21. Tammy says:

Okay, the Campaigning for the Oscar ad bit was not funny, and was like one of the less funny Daily Show bits. And the mocking of the old couple and their values was typical. “We can’t vote for people with foreign sounding names, especially in a time of war.” Ha ha ha.

  22. Tammy says:

All I really care about is if they dare to give the Foreign Film Oscar to the Palestinian- terrorists-are-good movie. They like things that explode, well, then they better stay away from my head…

  23. Tammy says:

Charlize Theron is hot. I know, I’m a brain surgeon. And it’s good March of the Penguins won, even though it was a sad/scary/murder/death/kidnapping movie that scared the bejesus out of me.

  24. Tammy says:

Jennifer Lopez’s dress is nice, but let me just say I’ve never lost any sleep over her. She goes into the Jessica Alba category for me. Just haven’t had time 😉

  25. Carpediem says:

Tammy, stop torturing yourself, no one should have to go through what you are going through now by watching this for us. You can walk away, we understand. You will be graduating from wine to martinis if you keep this up. Damnit woman, don’t do this to yourself !

  26. Tammy says:

Here goes Samuel L. Jackson helping pat themselves on their collective back. And yes, because they were right in the past means they’re right now. And everyone’s out of step except them. It must be *incredible* to be them, gold-flecked soup and all!

  27. Tammy says:

    Selma Hayek Who?

  28. Talkin Horse says:

In all seriousness, I’ve always been mystified about why Hollywood leans Left. I say this as a pseudointellectual, meaning that I really like some of the dark and kooky films that these guys come out with. And it seems obvious to me that the “artsy” people are pretty much self-indulgent lunatics, and we know they’re lunatics and they know they’re lunatics, and you’d naturally expect their political attitude to tolerate the rest of us just as we tolerate them. In other words, I’d reasonably expect they’d naturally be either anti-political or lean Libertarian. I’m not saying that as an endorsement of the Libertarians, that just seems logically where they’d end up. Instead, they jump onto the political bandwagon that tries to tell us what to do. Yes, they make a lot of noise about freedom of expression, but that freedom of expression doesn’t mean anything if you’ve lost your economic freedoms or your freedom to defend yourself. That’s what bugs me about Leftists: They deny the obvious fact they want to control our lives, while screaming idiotically about their paranoid fantasies of how everyone else is trying to control them. They get mad if the FBI checks library records, but couldn’t care less about how the IRS continually strip-searches our economic records. I think Tammy is correct in her evaluation that these people are so self-centered that they simply cannot comprehend that a decent, intelligent person might not agree with them on everything or accept their complete and absolute leadership. Anyone who disagrees with me must, by definition, be evil! Why am I ranting about the obvious? I should shut up and have a drink.

  29. helpunderdog says:

Oh, we shouldn’t be upset at all about all the anti-America garbage Hollywood has put out in the past year. Silly us! Depict all those “uncomfortable truths” as the president of the academy put it? Why, it’s for the country’s own good! Americans must laud Hollywood for making movies we don’t like or agree with – as you know, Hollywood knows best. What’s wrong with us? They’ve explained themselves, they’re political activists! Let’s all go and unquestioningly blow our hard-earned money at the movies. It’s for a good cause.

  30. helengal says:

Against my better judgement I’ve turned on the Oscars. I don’t think I’ve seen any of these movies! What a lot of self-aggrandizing! I feel so out of touch. Salma Hayek’s dress is pretty though.

  31. helengal says:

I think that our culture (sadly) worships fame and fortune and the elite Hollywood types truly believe themselves to be American Royalty.

  32. c-c-right says:

Just watching to see “Walk the Line” get the awards…really one of the few movies deserving of the nominations (but grossly under-nominated in some categories).

  33. Tammy says:

That Lily Tomlin/Meryl Streep bit was awful. It was beneath both of them, and I get it re the Altman style, but it was really bad.

  34. Tammy says:

Great. Now it’s the rap music “nominated song” because of which Gil Cates decided the words “bitch” and “hoes” would now be okay to say on the Oscars.

This is what’s called “Hits bottom, digs” when it comes to the bottom of the cultural barrel.

  35. RagingBullmoose says:

    How phoney is Hollywood?

They present themselves as “champions of free speech and dissent”, which is why, sadly, I believe they’re going to toss the best foriegn film award to “Paradise Now”.

Ironically enough we are, at present, about a year removed from the savage and brutal murder of Theo Van Gogh, one of their contemporaries no less, for daring to point out that Islam has it’s faults, (although, I’m not certain that savage treatment of women, captives, and unbelievers can be categorized accurately with the word fault, perhaps the word perversion or travesty would be more accurate),by the same savages who would make and celebrate such a film.

Where is the praise for Theo Van Gogh? An artist who literally died, more to the the point was in fact martyred, unlike the figurative sort of martyrdom the MalNars often claim for themselves when the public refuses to participate in their dillusions, or the phoney martyrdom of the suicidal Islamists.

Why, Mr. Spielberg, are the Black Semptembers so worthy of a humanizing (tough luck Stevie, you failed on that score) tale, and not a fellow film maker?

Was Van Gogh, “out of touch” with reality or reality as you percieve it, Mr. Clooney?

I will remember Theo Van Gogh’s name until the day I die. In Hollywood, he was as good as forgotten the minute he was laid in the earth, as he WAS everything these pretentious, souless, fools, wish they were, and will never be.

All apologies for letting this become a rant.

  36. Tammy says:

Well, there you go. The rap “song” wins the Academy Award. And you thought it couldn’t get any worse. But here’s the irony–one guy in the band, when accepting, through all the rest of their indecipherable speech, said “Thank you Jesus.” I guarantee you, that will be the only time Jesus is referred to in a positive way this evening.

  37. helengal says:

It’s no wonder Al-Queda wants to annihilate our culture.

  38. Tammy says:

Jennifer Garner almost slipped. I swear, I bet she slipped on the sweat of the rap band. I’m not kidding.

  39. Tammy says:

King Kong is winning a few awards tonight, but Narnia really isn’t. What does it have bynow, one? maybe it should have had a score by Kanye West and a theme of murdering all the Western Islamophobic Imperialists, then it would have gotten some attention.

  40. Prah Qwan says:

Jon Stewart rocks. I love his show and I think he’s doing a great job. If we HAVE to examine his performance through the liberal vs conservative prism, I’d say he’s skerwering both sides equally well. But it’s all in fun anyway, so lighten up and don’t stress. Enjoy the show!

  41. Tammy says:

Now it’s the memorial for all those who died last year. I think the depravity of the Academy came through when they ignored the murder of Theo van Gogh. Shame on them.

  42. helpunderdog says:

Pimps, yes of course, let’s embrace and mainstream hip-hop misogyny! As they earlier told us, the academy throughout its history has confronted difficult truths. The academy is doing the racially/socially progressive thing and exposing the victimhood of Pimps. Poor things. Let’s hear it for pimps!

  43. Tammy says:

Thank goodness the “Palestinian” pro-suicide bomber film did not win for Best Foreign film. Things are really bad when this is the good news of the night.

  44. Talkin Horse says:

The suicide bomber film was probably not much of a contender. It was likely just a thing they tossed into the mix to show how enlightened and even-handed they are. (“Look at how we listen to suicide bombers. We’re opening a dialogue. We’re getting at the root cause of the world’s problems, rather than simply condemning acts of unspeakable evil like stupid people do.”) They made their point with the nomination; an actual award would be going too far.

  45. Tammy says:

Talkin Horse, you give Hollywood *way* too much credit.

  46. helpunderdog says:

Yay Reece! She deserved it. Genuine and classy.

  47. Tammy says:

Well, they did it. Best Director goes to Ang Lee which means, in all liklihood, Brokeback Mountain will get Best Film.

Gay cowboys and rap music. Impressive.

  48. Prah Qwan says:

Woot! “Crash” Best Picture 2006! America officially not racist until next years Academy Awards!

  49. Tammy says:

Wow! This is rare–the gave the Director nod to Lee but not picture! What’s that about? Really, if you think a director did the best job, then the end result should be the best, and vice versa. If a picture is best, then why not the director?

Or are they really just cowards and did they give the award to Lee because of politics?

  50. Tammy says:

Thank goodness though nothing else went to George Clooney.

  51. Tink says:

    Random comments/observations:

I tuned in half way through— all I cared about was seeing Reece win. She (and the memory of June Carter Cash) was the light in a very dark room tonight. I’m so proud of her and all the things she said. What a fine, fine woman! I hope she doesn’t let Hollywood chew her up.

Horse, a little FYI. They didn’t just throw in the ‘terrorists are just misunderstood’ nomination. I’m pretty sure it won a Golden Globe for best foreign film.

I had heard a few comments last week that “Crash” might upset. I’m thrilled it did, although I didn’t think it was all that great. (That happened to Spielberg with “Saving Private Ryan.” They gave it to him, but snubbed the movie)

And did anyone else get the distinct feeling that Jack Nicholson hadn’t seen any of the movies either?

Why does Tom Hanks persist with the bad hair?

This is my most important question— Joaquin Phoenix, who we never ever hear dating stories about, mouthed something when his name was announced as a nominee. I would’ve sworn that it was “I love you…..” Did anyone else catch that? As Tammy says, hmmmmm.

  52. Talkin Horse says:

I don’t understand how “Crash” could get Best Screenplay. It was such a ham-fisted effort of manipulation that I couldn’t believe in either the characters or the plot points.

  53. EML says:

What was up with that pimp song at the academy awards? Did anyone think that was inappropriate for the academy awards?

  54. Billy Beck says:

“If you’re not watching the Oscars you made the right choice. I am now drinking a glass of wine.”

I spent my evening reading Vol. IV of Will Durant’s “The Story of Civilization”.

I could not have been dragged to within eye-shot of that insipid mess, and I’m sorry to hear that you put yourself through that. Better luck next year.

  55. predoc says:

I like to be entertained by watching movies, but lately I’ve had to entertain myself in other ways. Watching the Oscars is not one of them. I stopped watching that show when Chariots of Fire beat Raiders of the Lost Ark for the “best” (which I read “most entertaining”) picture of the year. Give me a break.

  56. Marie says:

Pity to the people that think the Hollywood actor actually has a mind of their own, especially a political one (have you ever read Barbara Streisands website? oi vey!. It’s not butter, it’s treasonous!) These people are overpaid to read someone elses words as if they were their own. Unfortunately, they tend to believe what they memorize ARE their own thoughts…I love to be entertained by excellent drama, comedy, singing, dancing but I don’t need their political or personal views as part of the entertainment. These people start patting themselves on the back around January or so and don’t stop until summer…I thought Jaime Foxx was great last year at the Golden Globes when he gave his acceptance speech and started choking up about his Grandmother being his inspiration…I was blown away when he went through the same choke up crying routine at the Oscars, which goes to show you just can’t rehearse enough!!! That was it for me…we just don’t waste our prescious down time watching this stuff anymore…there are really just a few great actors out there and they don’t seem to get the recognition they deserve…
