Poetess Sappho, the causer of the trouble.

And no fellas, it’s not because she finally met the right man–it’s when you’re a heterosexual woman from the Greek island of Lesbos. Yeah, you’d be mad, too, if the homos co-opted your geographical designation!

People of Lesbos take gay group to court over term ‘Lesbian’

ATHENS, Greece – A Greek court has been asked to draw the line between the natives of the Aegean Sea island of Lesbos and the world’s gay women. Three islanders from Lesbos — home of the ancient poet Sappho, who praised love between women — have taken a gay rights group to court for using the word lesbian in its name…

“My sister can’t say she is a Lesbian,” said Dimitris Lambrou. “Our geographical designation has been usurped by certain ladies who have no connection whatsoever with Lesbos,” he said. The three plaintiffs are seeking to have the group barred from using “lesbian” in its name and filed a lawsuit on April 10.

“This is not an aggressive act against gay women,” Lambrou said. “Let them visit Lesbos and get married and whatever they like. We just want (the group) to remove the word lesbian from their title.” […] Lambrou says Sappho was not gay. “But even if we assume she was, how can 250,000 people of Lesbian descent — including women — be considered homosexual?”

An island of Lesbians, but no Jackie Warner. Bummer. What a sad and odd parallel universe.

Jackie Warner. Sort of like Sappho, but not. Not the poetry part anyway.

They think they’ve got a problem. Just imagine what it’s like to be a Cretin from the Greek isle of Crete.

So how long do you think they will insist on monopolizing “lesbian” if Olivia Cruise Lines stops making port calls there, taking all those queer dollars elsewither?

  3. Loveart says:

I have been so used to being labeled a Lesbian, that it might be refreshing to be confused with a greek national! Whoops, but I am Blonde and Blue-eyed, wouldn’t be at home on that isle.

I thought the lady who sued McDonald’s for spilling her coffee on herself years ago was as low as it could go. I take that back now. I have an urge to send all three islanders some birks. However, I have a feeling that the message would not sink in.

If the non-lesbian Lesbians are willing to take Rosie O’Donnell and some Code Pinkers off our hands, I’m willing to negotiate.

  8. mrfixit says:

The natural lingual extension would be Lesboan, no? But if they are bugged by it they can always say they are from the greek isles. After all, I don’t say I’m a Californian. It’s a pickey point, I know.

Hehehe…Kevin Smith always said his lesbian friends told him that “Chasing Amy’ was science fiction.
