Israel Decries U.N. Troops After Peacekeepers Salute Dead Hezbollah Terrorists
Israel is calling for removal of two United Nations soldiers from Lebanon after photographs surfaced of the soldiers saluting the coffins of Hezbollah terrorists during a prisoner exchange Wednesday.
Associated Press photographer Mohammed Zaatari captured an image of the troops paying homage to fallen Hezbollah fighters as trucks bearing their coffins drove through the city of Tyre in southern Lebanon.
The blue-helmet U.N. troops, who operate under the auspices of the U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), are meant disarm Hezbollah in southern Lebanon and be an impartial buffer along the country’s border with Israel.
Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, Dan Gillerman, said he was “shocked and horrified†by the photograph and that it was time for the saluting soldiers to go.
“I think they should be recalled and be sent back to whichever country they came from,†said Gillerman. “I think they’ve definitely compromised their impartiality and have in a very big way, in a very serious way, compromised the integrity of the United Nations.â€
But a UNIFIL spokeswoman said the salute was nothing out of the ordinary.
“It is customary in most armies for military personnel in uniform to salute whenever a coffin passes in a procession,†UNIFIL spokeswoman Yasmina Bouziane said. “They were merely following this customary military tradition and saluted coffins draped in Lebanese national flags at their own initiative.â€

To be fair to men in uniform – the coffins in the picture is indeed draped with the national flag of the country they are stationed within and the picture shows a man in uniform. They would look very callous just standing there, guns at the ready.
That said, a good commander would have evaluated the situation (possible non-military combatants and terrorist corpses making their way into his AO), and directed his men to withhold the traditional honor given to fellow men under arms. He may have very well done this and these men disobeyed. He may not have done this.
The entire event underscores the even bigger problem – why the hell are we using a sword to butter bread. You don’t use a military fighting force to police a populace. We shouldn’t be in the UN nor should we allow our soldiers to be placed under UN authority.
PAPER TIGER, You are an honorable person and sound like a soldier. I agree totally. I would just say: “Birds of a feather…” The Blue Hats are probably Hezbos. One rapes little girls, the other, little boys.
The only surprise is that there is any surprise regarding the UN honoring and supporting terrorists.
I don’t know much about military protocol, but it seems out of place for UN Peacekeeping troops to do anything that would “disturb” the peace. Remaining neutral might have been the better way to go here, if it’s otherwise a military thing to salute ALL soldiers’ coffins, regardless if they are the “enemy” or not.
Who were the guys that did it? What country are they from? That might shed some light.
