Hmmmm, interesting question, will Romney’s Veep be picked to bring in votes or for useful governing skills? Romney will continue to trumpet his own executive and business experience, in sharp contrast to Obama and Biden; that, combined with his need to fire up the base, may nudge him towards the crowd-pleaser.

Although I’m vastly impressed by West, I can see the argument that his experience is limited. But inexperience didn’t stop Obama. As a voter, I’d be more willing to gamble on an inexperienced West than an inexperienced Obama. But Johnny’s argument made sense, and I could see the line might catch on with voters: A pair of governors from the heartland, instead of a pair of Senators from the beltway. Who is closer to the people? Put that way, it’s something of a slam dunk.

By the way, I’ve got to give credit to Romney. In this era of clowns and gaffes, Romney’s played a pretty steady game. Sure, a couple of instances where his words were less than optimal, but he hasn’t messed up in any substantial way. That may not sound like much, but it’s actually pretty impressive, considering how much stress a candidate is under. Obama and Biden have gaffed plenty, but the press avoids trumpeting their nonsense, and even corrects their mistakes for them. (I’m flashing back to Obama’s “My Muslim faith” slip (YouTube); see how the reporter jumps in to fix Obama’s goof. Not a thing they’d do for, say, Sarah Palin.)
