If Hillary was actually approached and declined it will save the tiny thread of respect I still have for her. It’s time for that woman to say no to men who use her to save their own political careers.

So, as I predicted, it sounds like McCain’s comments a few days ago weren’t speculation. That the good friend of Hillary knew exactly what had already happened. Let’s hope Obama is truly stuck with Uncle Joe–The Gift That Keeps On Giving!

During Thursday night’s “The Kudlow Report” on CNBC, “The Amateur” author Ed Klein said that according to sources within the Clinton camp, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was approached about the possibility of beingPresident Barack Obama’s running mate in November. And, Klein said, she turned it down.

Pundits and talking heads have discussed in recent weeks the possibility of Vice President Joe Biden being replaced on the Democratic presidential ticket, particularly with news of his brief hiatus from the spotlight this weekend.

“Up until just a couple of weeks ago the White House was putting out feelers to see if Hillary would accept the vice-presidential nod and replace Joe Biden,” Klein said. “Bill Clinton was, I’m told, urging his wife to accept the number two slot. He saw this as a great launching pad for her for running in 2016.”

“But then Hillary had lunch in the White House a couple of weeks ago with Valerie Jarrett — Michelle [Obama]’s best friend, senior adviser to both the first lady and the president … and she told Valerie that she would not accept the vice president’s spot. The lunch was ostensibly about other matters, but it came up. … Hillary felt burned out after four years as Secretary of State. But I’m told there were more important reasons for her not accepting.”

Those reasons, Klein explained, involve the former first lady being put in positions that would make her vulnerable if she should decide to run for president four years from now.

The idea that Biden might be replaced really bugs me, because I have no clue where it came from, nor does it sound like a plan that would ever work. Did it truly evolve from within the smoke-filled room of Democrat strategists, or has it been wishful thinking on the part of the conservative blogosphere all along? Not that I know what I’m talking about, but it would seem that it is far too late to have “Obama/Hillary 2012” signs and stickers made up.

Speaking in ignorance of the evidence supporting these allegations (I’m not saying I don’t believe them; I’m just saying I don’t know so what I say here may be far off base), it seems to me that the mere fact that we’re having this discussion has a significant political impact, and that’s a motivation for the behind-the-scenes powers that would benefit to encourage us to have this discussion, regardless of whether there’s any substance behind it. That’s just the way it is in this world; the PR mavens are always pushing a narrative.

The obviously beneficiary here is Romney/Ryan. Because if the world thinks there are whispers about replacing Biden, that reinforces the idea that Biden is a babbling incompetent dunderhead. Of course, you probably already thought Biden was a jackass, but now it’s cool to say it. And now the Democrats are defensive about Biden, and they’re put in the awkward position of explaining why Biden isn’t that stupid.

It’s a sort of funny situation, in that the tables are turned, because it’s usually the Republican that has to defend against being stupid. Same charge against Ford, Reagan, Quayle, Bush Jr., Palin. At some level, you even come to identify with these charges. In moments of semi-levity, I’ve admitted to preferring the stupid party over the evil party. Bush Jr. made a number of self-deprecating jokes.

Anyway, you notice that, of all the mud being slung at Romney and Ryan, the epithet you don’t hear is “stupid”. That ground is solidly held by Biden, at least for the purpose of quick insults. The Democrats have had a fine time dishing it out over the years, and we’ve gotten used to being on the receiving end. I don’t see the Democrats showing similar grace when the shoe is on the other foot.

I understand that once Biden got the news of this meeting between Valerie and Hillary his reaction was “Im the Vice President??”
