University of Washington Spends Science Grant on Hawaiian Vacation, Snuggies

A public university used federal funding for scientific research as its own personal piggy bank, spending hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars on personalized Snuggies, pottery, and a trip to Hawaii, according to a new audit report. The University of Washington spent $8,821 of National Science Foundation (NSF) grant money on unallowable promotional items and gifts, including personalized Snuggie blankets, according to audit from NSF’s Inspector General. The wasteful purchases included $3,920 for canvas bags, mini optical mice and custom Snuggies and an additional $1,179 for embroidered Snuggies. Biden’s One-Night Stay in Mexico Cost Taxpayers $538,528 For Hotels Alone

Vice President Joe Biden’s hotel tab for his recent one-night stay in Mexico City cost taxpayers more than $500,000. Biden, who attended an annual economic summit with Mexican leaders, stayed at the luxury Intercontinental Presidente Hotel. Biden led a delegation attending the summit that included Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker, Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz, and Interior Secretary Sally Jewell. The trip called for 260 hotel rooms and meeting spaces, according to a State Department contract. The total hotel tab was $538,528.65.
