NRO slideshow on the Battle of Peleliu. It was the first of the Japanese, island fight and die battles. Of 10,000 Japanese soldiers, 19 survived. Battle resulted in 8 Medals of Honor and 69 Navy Crosses for the USMC. 40 slides, the last 10 are acclaimed paintings from Life magazine artist.

I highly recommend a book about this battle- With The Old Breed by E.B. Sledge – arguably the best book written on WWII Pacific fighting.
