After 70 years, the identity of one of our heroes in the famous Rosenthal picture has been corrected. At first, it was believed that the second person in the picture from left to right was not Navy Corpsman John Bradley, but Pfc. Harold Schultz. Mr. Bradley was present at the raising of the first (smaller) flag. Mr. Schultz was wounded in action and shipped stateside shortly thereafter.
While it is important to correct the historical records, the true identities of the men is not as important as their deeds.
