French Telecom was in trouble because of cell phones in 2003 and the Government ordered it to go private. By 2005, it was $50 billion in debt. It determined that around 20% of employees needed to be laid off but French Labor Law prevented layoffs. So management began a campaign of harassment to get employees to quit. Suicide doubled.
