Why did civilization lag in Africa?

The stock answer is European colonial exploitation, but it is possible (and to me seems likely) that there is something more fundamental at play: large land animals and predators, and GERMS.

    There was a Muslim influence that organized the slavery to the British in the early 1600’s.There is evidence that it continues to this day. But the greed of the Diamond mine owners could have done a lot to eliminate the poverty.And the Judeo-Christian missionaries couldnt overcome the strength of the war lords.
