“You Could See Sharks Circling”

I don't know if it's proper to post a personal story here, but we're all in the TAM family. My story is no more or less important than all of the thousands of people who lost someone during WWII. This changed my family forever. My father lost his brother on the sometimes forgotten ship, USS Indianapolis. He died at the age of 19, when the sink was sunk. I look at my son, who is a little older and can not imagine what my grandmother went through. The Indy was at Iwo Jima, among other places, and the last mission she had was going Tinian island, carrying parts and the enriched uranium for the Hiroshima bomb. After the ship was sunk, the Navy succeeded in destroying the life of the Captain, who killed himself in 1968. Please take a minute and read the article.

Thank you, TGH. I was unfamiliar with this episode in the history of WWII. Imagine the terror, and courage, that floated there in the Pacific for those many many hours.

TGH, thanks and prayers to your uncle for his service. I think personal stories are fine. We are a Tamily and we fight for freedom today and for freedom tomorrow. We have to have our pasts to have a present and a future.

Robert Shaw’s character in Jaws became a shark hunter because he (the character) served on the USS Indianapolis. There’s a scene in the movie where he talks about it.

I appreciate stories that make these news stories real. We are humans and man’s inhumanity to man is something that is newsworthy. Thanks for sharing this. Prayers to your family and thanks for their service.

That scene in Jaws was so memorable that every June 29th I thought about what those men went through. The land “sharks” finished the job on the Captain. Basically the war ended because of their delivery and yet so few know their plight.

Thanks so much for sharing this with us. I found it very painful to read, but I figured if they could go through this horror, the least we could do is read and remember them. May God rest their souls.
