Mickey Spillane

Vengeance is Mine!

“Velda was watching me with the tip of her tongue clenched between her teeth.”

“There wasn’t any kitten-softness about her now. She was big and she was lovely, with the kind of curves that made you want to turn around and have another look. The lush fullness of her lips had tightened into the faintest kind of snarl and her eyes were the carnivorous eyes you could expect to see in the jungle watching you from behind a clump of bushes.”

Yeah. And this was just about Mike Hammer’s secretary.

Mystery and crime writer Mickey Spillane dead at 88.

I’m saddened to hear of Spillane’s passing. His books were so primal and lusty that you had to love them. Leftwing intellectuals hated him, of course, for his political incorrectness that was as crude as it was powerful. And those great old paperback covers! Here’s Vengeance is Mine (from the BookScans collection). Those are the old covers, of course; the new ones were even more risqué. For example, they posed a nude girl for the cover of his later The Erection Set. Hey, who is that lady, anyway? Why that’s Mickey Spillane’s wife, Sherri Malinou! Oh, and Ayn Rand was also a big fan, although I don’t think she posed for any covers.

Great writing. I doubt if Tammy would agree with the general attitude toward “dames” in his writing. That would be an interesting Tammy Radio, although I don’t get Tammy radio in Phoenix or on my computer at my desk here.
