UNpotent

Is it just me, or is there something unspeakably disturbing in this symbolism?

Whether or not you agree with me on this (intentionally vague) assessment, you can see why the mad mullahs of Iran don’t exactly quake in their boots when they receive another sternly-worded letter.

This sculpture graces the Visitor’s Plaza at the United Nations building in New York. It was presented to the U.N. as a gift from the government of Luxembourg in 1988.

I guess it’s a nice enough ideal, in its passive way. Nobody should reach for a gun when a less forceful tool will do the trick. But when push comes to shove, I’d rather have Snuffy close at hand than depend upon thusly-armed boys and girls in powder-blue uniforms to come and save the day.

(By the way, it’s looking like Libya will host the next U.N. conference on racism. The previous conference, in 2001, broke down into an anti-Israeli anti-Semitic hate-fest, and was boycotted by the U.S.)

  1. A few minutes with a burning torch and we could make that into a nice display of a two inch Colt Python.

  2. Sparky says:

When the Hell are we going to pack up the U.N. and send it packing to Paris? If our “leaders” don’t want to do anything so drastic, then let’s pacl them up and send them to the middle of Kansas in tornado alley. I would doubt any New Yorkers would shed a tear for the welcome absence of abusive “diplomatic immunity” that clogs NYC with protected foreign traffic violators and non-payers at restaurant scofflaws.
