Maynard advises the former president

Mr. Bush, I know you’re a busy man, so I’ll be brief.

You have kept a low profile since leaving office. Aside from being the customary course of action, this is a politically savvy move, in light of your successor’s desire to blame you for everything that’s not right with the world. Whether he’s justified in his accusations or not, charges against an invisible target tend to be counterproductive.

You are of course aware that Attorney General Eric Holder has appointed a special prosecutor to investigate possible illegal interrogation techniques applied during your administration. I think the gravity of this situation justifies a brief appearance by you.

I would suggest you draft a short memo, asserting the necessity of the interrogation program and noting the life-savings results it produced, and assuring that all was done according to law. Go on to note the demoralizing effect the threat of prosecution is causing to our warriors, thus rendering our defense less effective and putting innocent lives at risk.

The foregoing was preliminary. Your final and most important point is to accept full personal responsibility for all that was done. You therefore demand that if prosecutions are to be made, then you also must be prosecuted; if prison sentences are to be handed down, then you also must be imprisoned. Lay it on the line: I stand with my people and I stand with America. The buck stops here.

Of course there’s a vocal minority that will urge Holder to “go for it”. But the bulk of the nation is appreciative of the fact that America was kept safe during your tenure; a thing that none of us expected looking forward from September 12, 2001. So if the Lockerbie bomber goes free and George Bush ends up in jail…well, jail will be the least of your problems, because America as we know it will no longer exist.

But we’re not going to let that happen. You stand with us and we’ll stand with you. That’s the America we know and love.

  1. It seems that Dick Cheney has really been doing the President’s job more so than G.W. Bush, who seems to be more interseted in writing his memoirs-as if he’s got it made already-than he is ready to face a punk like Obama. I hope I’m wrong, but I have had this continual feeling since Bush was elected that he used us conservatives to get in office, and then slowly but surely sold us out issue by issue until there was no politcal capital left…with the uiltimate sellout being that he won’t even stand up for his own anti-terror policies (excluding of course his bonehead endorsement of Illegal Immigration)-or were the anti-terror policies Dick Cheney’s after all?

People have wondered why George W. Bush never defended himself or the policies of his administration especially in its final two years. He just sat back and let his opponents pound him and pound him with little or no response. My own personal theory as to why is that sometime in early to mid-1996, Bush suffered a mild stroke. It didn’t incapacitate him physically but it did have some effect on his mental status. In other words, he was 100% physically but only 75-80% there mentally. Only his closest aides and advisors knew this and that’s why he was seemingly hunkered down in the White House all the time, rarely giving news conferences and barely bothering to respond to anything. It would explain why, in the final two years of his presidency, Bush seemed to be just “there” and little else. Perhaps he should have stepped aside. Perhaps not. I don’t know that something like this happened to the man but it would explain some things.

Mr.Bush never made a stand for OUR TROOPS when he was in office so I don’t have much confidence in his doing so now. That was his biggest weakness…NOT communicating what the American wanted to hear- a strong leader, proud and capable of protecting our Great Country!

One of the many infuriating things about Bush was that he would never just explain why he was doing things that the left were screaming about. He seemed detached and somewhat aloof as if his actions needed no explanations or defense. Perhaps it was that no matter what he said, there was an army of lefty news outlets and lawyers ready to pounce. Barkey is going to witness the ire of “we the people” if someone pops a dirty nuke somewhere in the next year. Of course, it will be blamed on the anger created by Bush that caused the “man-made disaster”, not the prosecution of CIA, and handcuffing, and blinding of our anti-terror operatives.
