So, I was a Leo, and thank goodness am still a Leo even though there’s been a major change in the horoscoping. While I feel sorry for all the hippies who are no doubt struggling with this news, all is good in my sector which is still very Leoish. Oh, and “they” have also announced a new sign–“Ophiuchus.” Gesundheit and good luck.
Wobbly Earth Means Your Horoscope Is Wrong
If you look to your horoscope for a preview of your day, look again: You’re probably following somebody else’s supposed fate.
Thanks to Earth’s wobble, astrological signs are, well, bunk. (Or even more bunk than you might expect.) Astrological signs are determined by the position of the sun relative to certain constellations on a person’s day of birth. The problem is, the positions were determined more than 2,000 years ago. Nowadays, the stars have shifted in the night sky so much that horoscope signs are nearly a month off…
Here’s what astronomers know: The Earth is like a wobbly top. As it rotates, its axis swings in a circle, pointing in different directions. As the Earth’s position shifts, so does our perspective of the night sky.
For example, Rao said, we take the North Star, Polaris, for granted. It’s the star most closely aligned with Earth’s North Pole. But back when the pyramids were constructed, the star that aligned with the North Pole wasn’t Polaris at all: It was a star in the constellation Draco called Thuban. In 12,000 years, Earth’s North Star will be Vega, the brightest star in the constellation Lyra.
The complete rotation takes 26,000 years…
Here are the new dates to see if you should read a completely different horoscope in the morning.
Capricorn: Jan. 20-Feb. 16.
Aquarius: Feb. 16-March 11.
Pisces: March 11-April 18.
Aries: April 18-May 13.
Taurus: May 13-June 21.
Gemini: June 21-July 20.
Cancer: July 20-Aug. 10.
Leo: Aug. 10-Sept. 16.
Virgo: Sept. 16-Oct. 30.
Libra: Oct. 30-Nov. 23.
Scorpio: Nov. 23-29.
Ophiuchus: Nov. 29-Dec. 17.
Sagittarius: Dec. 17-Jan. 20.
The list includes Ophiuchus, a formation the ancient Babylonians discarded because they wanted 12 star signs, not 13. You betcha!
Ophiuchus means ‘ serpent bearer’. oh my…
i’ve been using a free software product called Celestia… if anyone is interested in actual astronomy and the stars you might really enjoy it. it’s interactive star maps- fun and easy to use.

the older you get the more you are suppose to become like your rising sign. i’m leo with scorpio rising and have found this to be true.
Two things: 1) why is Scorpio there for only seven days, when the rest of them are there for weeks? and 2) me a Taurus? and all this time I thought I was a Gemini. Oh well.
So now I’m a Gemini.
That’s just great… .
Me too, apparently.
My family is not who I thought they were. LOL
[…] This post was mentioned on Twitter by Tammy Bruce, Gidgetwidget and others. Gidgetwidget said: FUCK! I'm REALLY A VIRGO??? https://tammybruce.com/2011/01/hippie-crisis-zodiac-in-cosmic-flux-horoscopes-change.html […]
I refuse to leave Aquarius and join Capricorn…first they take Pluto away from us and now this?
It’s the end of the world as we know it.
I feel fine. 🙂
Oh great – just the sort of news one needed today: I’m now part of something that sounds like a strain of bacteria known as Ophiuchus. I’m not even a hippie and am upset about this change!
I don’t know all the info on Ophichus yet, but come on. A Sagittarians key strength is Independence – is that not me?
I have always been a Sagittarius and am very comfortable identifying as such. This is how I was born; God made me this way, dammit.
I’m still Aries. In Chinese zodiac I was born in the Year of the Horse (1966).
But, I never pay attention to my horoscope.
astrology must be the stupidest theory i’ve ever heard….there’s absolutely NO evidence that the stars affect anything about anyone being born, personality, or any other such thing..just another stupid myth that was perpetuated and believed by irrational minds.
Not that I pay much attention to this other than the fun of it – but I will remain Aquarius not Capricorn no matter what they say ;-)!
What a relief! I’m still Pisces. Not sure if that’s a good thing or not, but what the heck.
Phooey. I’ll always be a Scorpio. Passionate & intense. The two characteristics that describe Scorpio. That’s me to a T 😉
I agree, I was born a Gemini, and that were the ‘rules’ then, and I am not paying attention to this new list of zodiac signs. I could never be a Taurus. That was my mother!
To the moon with those hippies! I’m still a Sagittarius if they like it or not!
Groovy enough.
My mane remains in tact. Still a Leo. Woo hoo!
Sorry for all you new Ophiuchusians. Not only do you have a new sun sign but it sounds like something you need a cream to treat.
LOL!!!!!
Tammy — As a resident of Wisconsin, and having personally met Reince Priebus once (it’s pronounced R-eye-ns – all one syllable – I know. It’s a strange name), I can honestly say that Priebus is a guy who is very supportive of the Tea Party movement, and encouraged our new Governor Walker and Senator Johnson to embrace the Tea Partiers in Wisconsin. The remarkable flip from “blue” state to “red” state, along with the state Senate AND state legislature, and two more US Congressional districts, all are proof that Priebus would be a really good national RNC chair — embracing the national Tea Party movement as well.
Cool! I sure hope it works out that way!
I always felt I was a Leo trapped in a Virgo body. Now it’s official – I’m a Leo! Whoo Hoo! I feel so liberated, and I am honored to share the same sign as Tammy.
My scales are shattered!!! My sense of balance is influx!! No longer a Libra?! But once I started reading Virgo I realized that perhaps it does fit better. Sure feel sorry for all those singles out in the bars now trying to decide what to say when asked what your sign is. I guess it might give them more compatibility.
Wikipedia says there are multiple theories as to the mythological origin of Ophiuchus the serpent-bearer. I think we can rule out Indiana Jones.
1/16/11 NY Daily News has an article that the new 13 sign horoscope is only for the Eastern Vedic astrology and not the Western zodiac astrology system which the Daily News carries daily. The Eastern Vedic system is based on our relationship to the stars and has changed as discussed above. The Western zodiac system is based on our relationship to the sun’s rays to the earth, ie, the seasons, and therefore is unchanged. So, east is east and west is west, but they overlap some.
