Dan Quayle was never good at expressing a sensible argument, although he may have been on the right side of things. With respect to Obama’s golf, there’s a valid point at the core of it: American’s won’t regard Obama’s golf as a big issue. It may be symbolic of Nero fiddling while Rome burns, but the problem is the burning and not the fiddling. Just like the heart of America wasn’t really in the impeachment of Clinton. The perception was that the big picture was okay, so we won’t worry overmuch about a few misdemeanors. I’m not trying to weigh in on this point; just noting that that’s the way it went down. I’m recalling an anecdote (not sure if it’s historically accurate) about President Lincoln and General Grant. When someone complained to Lincoln that Grant was a drunkard, Lincoln was said to have replied that he wanted to find out what Grant was drinking and send a case of it to all the other generals. If Obama was doing a good job, we won’t begrudge him his games or his cigarettes. We’ll kick Obama out of office because he’s making us broke and emboldening our enemies and generally ruining us, not because he took vacations and played golf and sneaked smokes.
