Gangsters and Romans and Marilyn, Oh my!

Christie’s expecting six-figure bid for Al Capone’s revolver

…Christie’s, the world-famous auction house, is selling Capone’s .38 special, a “police-positive” Colt nickel-plated, six-shot double-action revolver. It also has a handsome checkered walnut grip. Christie’s expects the winning bidder to cough up between $80,600 and $112,840. Hardly an offer you can’t refuse. A similar firearm sans the Scarface pedigree would run you a few hundred dollars.

The auction listing for the Brooklyn-born mob boss’s pistol says that Madeleine Capone Morichetti, wife of Capone’s brother, Ralph, explained in a 1976 letter to Edmund Koeski that Ralph “Bottles” Capone wanted Koeski to have the gun upon Bottles’ death. The letter further described the weapon as “a gun which previously belonged to and was used only Al Capone while he was alive.”

Roman baths are uncovered in York

The remains of a Roman bath complex have been uncovered in York.

The baths, which date from the second and third centuries AD, were discovered during construction of a new council headquarters building.

The edge of the complex was first discovered in the 1840s when the original railway station in the city was built on the site. “We know very little of the layout of the civilian town of Eboracum, as Roman York was called. Confirming the location of the baths gives us another important piece of the puzzle.”

He said they had been surprised by the standard of the remains as so much of the site would have been destroyed during the construction of the station during the 1840s.

The baths would have served the civilian population of Roman York as the army had its own facilities on the other side of the River Ouse.

Marilyn Monroe dress from ‘The Seven-Year Itch’ sells for $4.6 million

The dress that famously billowed up around Marilyn Monroe as she stood over a subway vent while filming “The Seven-Year Itch” sold for $4.6 million on Saturday at an auction of memorabilia belonging to actress Debbie Reynolds.

“Oh, do you feel the breeze from the subway?” Monroe said in the 1955 film. “Isn’t it delicious?”

Delicious indeed — the winning bid for the “subway grate” dress easily outstripped the $1 million to $2 million estimated value placed on the frock by dealer Profiles in History.

      Dated 3/27/2011-from the “popeater’ website:

‘Real Housewives of New Jersey’ star Teresa Giudice is dealing with yet another headache involving her husband:

Joe Giudice, 40, was arrested at the family’s New Jersey home Friday, charged with fraudulently obtaining a state driver’s license. The penalty if he’s found guilty? He could face more than 10 years behind bars, according to New Jersey’s chief assistant prosecutor. LMAO!!!

And he looks alot like ‘Big Al’, too, jeaneeinabottle.

      ciao’

It’s such a shame(!) Debbie Reynolds could never get the right investors involved for a museum. I can’t believe no one in Hollywood cared enough. I mean really, with the money some of those people have? God bless her for buying and taking care of all these things for so many years. It’s part of our American cultural history. Good for her though that she’ll finally have peace of mind being out of debt now. She’s a wonderful woman, and I’d like to add that Elizabeth Taylor was NOT the “last movie star.”
