Mitt Romney’s call to arms against Donald Trump backfired with even more Republicans saying they’ll back the GOP front-runner, according to a poll issued Tuesday.

The Morning Consult survey, taken between Friday and Sunday, showed 31 percent of GOP voters saying they’re “more likely” to support Trump compared to 21 percent “less likely” to back him following Romney’s passionate speech against the real estate titan on Thursday.

The Republican race appears to be tightening overall.

Trump would lose in one-on-one challenges from either GOP rival, another poll revealed on Tuesday.

Ted Cruz tops Trump, 54-41 percent, while Marco Rubio leads the New York real estate mogul, 51-45 percent, according to ABC News/Washington Post pollsters.

But as it stands now, in the splintered GOP race, Trump still has the overall lead with 34 percent support, ahead of Cruz at 25 percent, Rubio with 18 percent and John Kasich at 13 percent.

This survey was taken between Thursday and Sunday among a random national sample of 1,000 adults. The margin of error is 3.5 percentage points, pollsters said.
