New Crime Wave Sweeping America: Tuba Thefts
by Shifra on March 11, 2018Stealing tubas is now a thing. Who knew? Via WSJ. The shiny brass Mario Corso tuba stood out for 12 years as one of the largest members of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band in New Orleans. It is roughly 4 feet long and weighs 38.5 pounds, which makes what happened last month sound like someone blowing hot air. A thief ran off with it, presumably slowly. “What were they thinking?” says Ben Jaffe, the band’s creative director, who owned and played the sousaphone, a deep-pitched marching-band-style tuba. “What are they going to do with it?” The horn heist unfolded while the band was loading equipment into a van, which at some point was unattended, after a Feb. 24 New Orleans...

U.S. Jewish Singer Matisyahu Banned From European Event, Reinvited To Perform
by Shifra on August 19, 2015Reggae singer Matisyahu (Hebrew, for ‘Mattathias’) was born Matt Paul Miller, to a secular Jewish family in Pennsylvania. As a teenager, he began taking drugs, and dropped out of high school. In 1995, he traveled in Israel, and began studying about his Jewish heritage. He returned to the U.S., and settled in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, joining, for a time, with the Chabad Hasidic sect. He began to blend reggae music with Jewish themes, and was known as the “American Jewish Hasidic Reggae Rapper.” Although no longer part of the Hasidic sect, he strongly identifies as Jewish. Matisyahu was scheduled to appear at the Reggae Rototom Sunsplash Festival in Spain this week. But, in typical fashion, the anti- Israel BDS (Boycott,...

by Patricia on May 30, 2013A very brave young woman standing up against the horrors of sharia law and the inequities she sees in her Muslim religion. Raised in New York, Omnia Hegazy is trying to draw attention to issues in her homeland of Egypt. As Tammy has mentioned quite often – it will take the Women of the Middle East to change the backward, caveman mentality. From FoxNews: Pop singer Omnia Hegazyisn’t one to keep quiet about inequities she sees in her Muslim religion. Proof Our Culture Is Worth Fighting For==> Shirley Bassey and Adele
by Tammy on February 25, 2013Last night’s Oscar program was horrific, we know, yet there were two events which are good reminders about why our culture is worth fighting for: the performances of Dame Shirley Bassey and Adele. In an evening overflowing with rank sexism, and example after example of the decline of culture, here we have the 76 year-old Bassey, completely commanding the stage, and 25-year-old Adele, performing brilliantly the song which garnered her the Oscar. It might be a good idea for poseurs like “Beyonce” to watch these two women to see how true artists don’t need to lip-sync. Brava ladies, and thanks for reminding us what artistry is all about. Forgive the video quality here, both were apparently taken from televisions. For...

Singer Amy Winehouse Found Dead
by Tammy on July 23, 2011Details are still emerging, but singer Amy Winehouse has been found dead at her London home. She was 27. If you listen to Tammy Radio you know we very much admired her music and talent. Her album “Back to Black” is perhaps one of the best soul/pop recordings of the past 25 years. I lamented, on quite a few occasions, that her early death was inevitable. The combination of drugs and alcohol that ruled her life, unless addressed, would be the end of her. There has yet to be a determination as to the cause of death, but in some ways I feel addiction itself is a slow suicide. It’s a tough call because I know a lot of creative...
