Sauntering isn’t always a leisurely carefree stroll. For cows weighing over half a ton sauntering can lead to a “bovine emergency”, even for a cow named Lucky. Lucky for Lucky she has a kissable nose.

Pregnant cow named Lucky rescued from Erie well

Firefighters, neighbors and animal- control officers came to the rescue of a pregnant cow named Lucky after she tumbled 8 feet to the bottom of a well in Boulder County.Lucky was in a field near a livestock pen not far from 119th Street and Jay Road in Boulder County, west of Erie, when she sauntered onto a wooden platform above a well Friday afternoon.

Her 1,200- to 1,500-pound girth proved too much for the structure, which shattered, said Laura McConnell, spokeswoman for Mountain View Fire Rescue.

Firefighters, Boulder County animal- control officers and neighbors rushed to the scene of the bovine emergency about 3:30 p.m

A neighbor climbed into the well to calm the shaky animal, who was on her knees, Mountain View Lt. Tim Losh said. The neighbor also called someone who owned a crane, Losh said.”This old girl stole the hearts of our crew,” McConnell said of the cow she described as buckskin brown with big brown eyes.

After she was rescued, Lucky rested on the ground with her legs curled underneath her.”You just wanted to grab her by the fuzzy ears and kiss her nose”…

The rescue of Lucky isn’t the end of the happy ending.

A veterinarian checked out the cow afterward — pregnant cows that undergo trauma often abort their calves, McConnell said. But this cow was Lucky.

Lucky II.
