Now all we need to know is, will it be Maliki or Rice who waves a piece of paper while declaring, “peace for our time”?

U.S.-Iran Talks Resume in Baghdad

The United States, Iran and Iraq have agreed to set up a security subcommittee to carry forward talks on restoring stability in Iraq, the American envoy said Tuesday at the end of a second round of groundbreaking talks in the Iraqi capital with his Iranian counterpart.

“We discussed ways forward, and one of the issues we discussed was the formation of a security subcommittee that would address at a expert or technical level some issues relating to security, be that support for violent militias, al-Qaida or border security,” Ambassador Ryan Crocker said after the meeting that included lunch and spanned nearly seven hours…

Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki opened the meeting with an impassioned appeal for help from the two nations to stabilize Iraq and warned that militants from al-Qaida and other terror groups in Iraq were now fleeing and finding refuge elsewhere.

“We are hoping that you support stability in Iraq, an Iraq that doesn’t interfere in the affairs of others nor wants anyone to meddle in its own affairs,” he said, according to excerpts of al-Maliki’s remarks released by his office.

“The world … must stand together and face this dangerous phenomenon and its evils, which have gone beyond the borders of Iraq after terror and al-Qaida groups received strong blows and are now running away from the fight and moving to other nations,” he said.

    Tammy,

Drudge has the link to this story (which you should read) “US tells of ‘heated exchange’ in rare Iran talks…” and I think you and your listeners need to go to this link and read the story…you may see some of yourself in the story. http://www.americanthinker.com/2007/07/the_surge_succeeds.html

Very much agree that the progress actually being made in Iraq is not being reported. It’s very wrong and, unfortunately, nothing new. And the Bush administration has been consistantly lame in its ability to communicate effectively in presenting facts contrary to what the MSM may be reporting, or not reporting. They should be in the faces of the American people everyday, letting us know of the successes.

So. There was a “heated exchange”. What does it really matter? From Tammy’s wikipedia reference: “…tyrants should never be appeased.” By legitimizing the Iranians by this meeting, we are definitely appeasing.

Iran has no desire to stabilize Iraq. Iran has no desire to cooperate with anyone. Iran has repeatedly and boldly laughed at any attempts to challenge them. They have been very clear in their intentions. Why are we talking to them?

“We are going to raise the need for Iran to match its actions with its words in seeking strategic stability in Iraq.” I wonder what “raise the need” entails? Perhaps more threats of ineffectual sanctions, while Iran continues to be a haven for terrorists, continues in its nucler aspirations, and continues to supply weapons that are being used to destabalize Iraq and kill our soldiers. Why are we talking to them?

“McCormack (State Department spokesman) said Iran has not taken any steps to help bring about a stable Iraq, a goal he said Iran professes to share with the United States.” Okay and….? Sounds like maybe Iran can’t be trusted?? There’s a revelation. Why are we talking to them?

“We’ll see, if, as a result of these engagements, they will change their behavior.” Yep. I think a good sit-down, heart-to-heart is all we really needed with Iran all along. This ought to do it, with the exchange being “heated” and all. Please. Iran has been very consistant in its position: Death to America and Israel.
Where is the common ground from which to start? THERE IS NONE. Our being on a security subcomittee WITH THE MAIN SECURITY PROBLEM is inexplicable and ludicrous. We are disgracing (and fooling) ourselves by being in the same room, let alone talking to these thugs.

Of course, Chamberlain wasn’t quite as bad as appeasers since: he didn’t have his own example to look back on.

Oh for a world where Neville’s father Joseph Chamberlain had been PM, though.
