I wonder if Laura Bush will embrace this tyranny, and explain it away as “cultural” and “traditional” just like she did the burqa and the overwhelming oppression of women by our Saudi and UAE “allies.”

Alleged sex assault of boy shakes Dubai

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – The mother of a 15-year-old French-Swiss boy who was allegedly sexually assaulted by two Emirati men accused authorities Thursday of lying about a defendant’s HIV status to cover up the fact that AIDS exists in this booming Arab city-state.

The case has exposed deep rifts over attitudes toward homosexuality and what critics call an outmoded legal system, mixing religious and tribal values…Robert said she and her son, who previously had attended school in Dubai, where his father works, left the country early last month because French diplomats told her that her son might be prosecuted for homosexual acts, a crime here.

Two Emirati men, age 18 and 35, are on trial in Dubai, charged with kidnapping Robert’s son and another French boy, who were headed home from a shopping mall at the time, and sexually assaulting Robert’s son…

Some expatriates — both European managers and low-paid laborers, mostly from Asia — have long complained that foreigners, who far outnumber Emirati citizens, have few legal rights in Dubai. Earlier this week, about 4,000 south Asian workers were jailed for several days for going on strike to ask for higher wages — also against the law…

According to court documents, the alleged attack began when the juvenile defendant offered the two French boys, one of whom he knew slightly, a ride home from a Dubai mall. The two boys got in the car and were later joined by the two adult defendants.

The group drove to the edge of the Dubai desert, where the three defendants allegedly threatened the boys and took turns sexually assaulting Robert’s son in the car, while the other boy was told to stay behind a sand dune, according to the court documents.

Knuckle-draggers.

Hi Tammy, I have been immersed in your writing on and off since discovering your website. Boy, I wish I could talk to you: we have so much in common, despite the fact that I agree with comparatively few of your positions on political subjects. (Although you do write very smoothly and I absolutely find your reasoning engaging.)

OK: so, on the subject of Ayaan Hirsi Ali (a complicated character), whom you admire, I think you might enjoy and find absolutely riveting (as I did) Ian Buruma’s “Murder in Amsterdam: The Death of Theo van Gogh and the Limits of Tolerence” (2006, now in paperback). You can read it in 1 night, but it is serious journalism and so incredibly interesting, putting Hirsi Ali’s situation in Holland in context and interviewing her at some length. I think you will get a huge amount out of this book, and it is “New Yorker”-esque quality writing.

Also, re: Dubai. I have a strong interest in the ME kicked off by a trip to Egypt at 16. I have been following Dubai closely for some time: check out the architecture, if nothing else. You will find it so interesting: “The World”, “Burj al-Arab”, tallest tower in the world under construction, the beachfront, many of the best restaurants in the world. It is like Monaco, only super high-tech. I found the controversy in USA about Dubai owning the NYC Ports so bizarre, because Dubai is easily the most liberal “country” (it is an emirate) in ME, and has absolutely no connection to terrorism. Indeed, my real concern for Dubai is that it is setting itself up as the ultimate target for terrorism; Americans tend not to know about the strong Marxist element of Islamic terrorism (cf. Iranian revolution in 1979), but the richer you are, the more dangerous things get. Not to mention building the tallest tower in the world….

Anyway, don’t give up on Dubai. It is a future for the ME, a much more pacifist, liberal one than other countries sometimes point at. Sheikh al-Makhtoum is sometimes a little too enthusiastic about the building craze, but I think he is a good man.

As for homosexuality in ME, it is a terrible, terrible problem, even tho’ in reality, homosexual behaviour is quite widespread, esp. in Egypt and Saudi Arabia. Unfortunately, there can’t be a “moderate” Islam by definition, insofar as either you practice it (according to the letter of the law in the Koran) or you don’t. I don’t know how we will ever get past this problem. Christians have a long tradition of just ignoring inconvenient parts of the Bible, or calling them allegory. This tradition cannot exist in a religion (Islam) that revolves around a single text.

Anyway, that pink jacket on the cover of “New American Revolution” looks stunning on you. You should try more jewel tones! ;o)

PS—I literally cannot believe Patricia Ireland’s behaviour re: you & OJ. Simpson was in REALITY (the reality you were inhabiting) entirely about psychopathology and wife beating. Of course. The racial stuff is an archaeology of the history of the LAPD, which turned out to be potent enough to affect the verdict. But the actual murders were utterly devoid of racial implications in themselves and were all about domestic abuse and talking, as you rightly saw.

I cannot even fathom how devastating it would have been, esp. in that historical epoch, to be denounced as a racist by a woman of that influence. It boggles the mind. I am so incredibly sorry that happened to you. It’s disgusting, evil, stupid and incredibly irresponsible. I think maybe you should have sued her for something, even just to get an apology. I don’t approve of suing (only Americans really do it much), but this is legitimate.

And that ends the longest post in the world….

Laura speaks highly of Foney Baloney Malony. Malony started protecting child rapists 30 years ago in Oregon and has continued protecting child rapists to this day in LA. So it is not much of a stretch to say Laura would not condem what is happening in Dubai.

I personally think Nancy looks better dressed up as a Muslim than Laura. But beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It does show how similar the leadership of both major parties is; despite their protestations to the contrary!

It is glaring how we ‘qualify’ human rights when it involves the Islamic community when it suits our interests. (China as well) Either we mean what we say or we don’t. I have had it.
I am a huge Laura Bush supporter. I have always thought that she was a classy woman and was proud to have her as our first lady. However, when I saw her in that burka thing, surrounded by those woman who could barely see let alone speak, I was sick to my stomach.
I realize that Mrs. Bush believed that she was doing the right thing and indeed she was in increasing awareness of breast cancer. Her qualifications throughout the interview on Fox News Sunday was disturbing.
I recall after 9-11 when Mrs. Bush did the radio address about the woman in Afganistan and the rights they deserved..(rightfully so)..what happened since then? I had hoped then that she would at least speak out about the horrorible abuse that Muslim woman face under these ‘knuckle dragging’ tryannts. What I get is, “it’s a different culture and these women chose their lives” – Oh come on now Laura. Stop it.

Honestly, I think George needs to be the bull horn President, and Mrs. Bush needs to stick to the library. I hate saying this. I respect her. But what happened this weekend and now today Tammy with this posting makes me very upset.
