Not that we’re going to like all her policies, but it’s nice to see. I hope we might be seeing a worldwide trend 🙂

Tzipi Livni to forge new Israeli government

Three exit polls had suggested a 10 per cent winning margin in Wednesday’s primary election, but in the end Miss Livni, the foreign minister, defeated her closest rival, Shaul Mofaz, the transport minister, by only 431 votes.

Undeterred, she made a rallying call for party unity and urged supporters of Mr Mofaz and the two other losing candidates to put aside their differences. “The rivalry is over,” she said. “We have common goals. We are beginning to make a change and the national task is quickly to establish stability. There are opportunities that need to be promoted and there is economic instability.” Her attempts to become prime minister at the head of a working coalition received a major boost when Eli Yishai, the leader of the orthodox Shas movement, indicated that he would be willing to serve in a cabinet under her leadership.

Good for Tzipi Livini. From reading the article, though, it appears she’s won the Kadima primary, not the election itself.

Sounds like the coalition’s very shaky and Shas may pull out. I’d say it’s just as likely we see Bibi Netanyahu back soon as it is that Livni ever becomes PM. She’s a better face for Kadima than sleazebag Olmert was, but the pendulum’s swinging back to Likud.
