Perhaps The Best Bumper Sticker Of All Time
by Tammy on October 24, 2010(HT to TAM Maria for the pic π I think we all remember the days when it was dangerous to express revulsion at Obama, dangerous to voice our contempt. Remember the shocked splash that was made when this poster showed up on a freeway on-ramp in Los Angeles? I’m proud to say the willingness to publicly ridicule Urkel started in Los Angeles with that poster. I love the bumper sticker featured in this post, and at Tea Parties I see so many other clever stickers and t-shirts. While these items may seem small compared to our problem, never underestimate the importance of speaking your mind or demonstrating your principles. It’s a very important part of social change. We will stand...

When Government Exists For Itself
by Maynard on October 24, 2010A comment by Maynard You may know that the District of Columbia goes essentially unrepresented in Congress. See Wikipedia for details. The Wiki article is full of details and arguments and counterarguments, but the bottom line is the D.C. status is specified in the Constitution. When I was in public high school, the history book they gave me (and I suspect they’re not teaching it this way these days) explained it this way: Since D.C. was created to be the seat of the Federal government, and the residents were primarily there, directly or indirectly, in service of the Federal government, it would be a conflict of interest for these residents to elect that government. With the D.C. people weighing in,...

New Column: “On being out, proud and conservative”
by Tammy on October 23, 2010A new column has posted at The Guardian. I must admit, I felt the need to respond to the nature of the comments on my first article, simply because they highlighted one of my main complaints about the left–their hypocrisy on all issue they claim to be leaders on. Here’s a snippet, and you can click through to read the whole thing. Hope you enjoy it. On being out, proud and conservative There’s a little something I noticed in the reaction to my first article here at the Guardian β a question tucked in the midst of the hundreds of pithy and thoughtful reader contributions β I was asked: what is it like to be gay and conservative? After all,...

Your History Fix for the Day
by Tammy on October 21, 2010Stone Age humans liked their burgers in a bun Forget the idea that hunter-gatherers lived on low-carb meat diets. Palaeolithic mammoth burgers were eaten with a bun. Anna Revedin of the Italian Institute of Prehistory and Early History in Florence and colleagues analysed the wear-marks and traces of plants on 30,000-year-old grindstones found in Italy, Russia and the Czech Republic. This showed that they had been used as mortars and pestles to grind plants like cat’s tail and fern roots, which packed a starchy, high-energy punch. The find suggests that Stone Age humans across Europe even knew how to make flour β a complex process involving harvesting roots, then drying, grinding and finally cooking them to make them digestible. Revedin...
